starting problems

67, 383 ... it has been changed to electronic ignition, turns over but then kinda backfires when Im turning the key off, then smokes out of bottom of carburator. won`t start.

Did you just make to swap to EI or has that been in place a while? Do you mean it is smoking from the carb base plate?

ei, been in for years,,smokes out of the carb bottom and top,it run great befor i parked it

How long has it been parked? And did you use stabil?

If the engine is running as long as the key is turned to start and dies when you let off it's in the ballast resistor or it's circuit. when the key is in start it bypasses the ballast resistor so the full voltage is transfered to the coil. when in run it travels normally through the resistor. Jump out the resistor and see if it starts to rule it out
