Seems to me they were painted black and not left as cast. Or maybe if they were painted it was mainly from one side - meaning they didn't put a whole lot of time in painting. Cars in question are my 68 and 69 RR's.
 
I had my steering box professionally restored by Steer & Gear and they left it cast with yellow marks on some of the bolts and such. I'm not sure what the factory did and would think if anybody would know they would.
 
I sent mine to Firm Feel and I told them to leave it bare in case it had to stay that way. I'm leaning towards black because that's what I remember. Pretty sure the manual boxes were bare aluminum.

Manual boxes were bare aluminum, and I think the power boxes were cast color.
