The power steering gear box on my 68 net is leaking. I've called local auto parts stores, and all i can find is a rebuild kit. Though i could buy a reman from the internet. Is it worth buying a kit, and diy, for a shade tree mechanic ? Or is this something better left to some place like, steer n gear, or firm feel ? I've read some old threads, but most members wrote about using a rebuild service. Couldn't find much nuts and bolts info on rebuilding your own.

Likely because there's a few special tools beyond what the average guy owns. IIRC, you need a press, and bearing adapter, a FSM, and a clue.

Well, the clue part lets me out. Lol. Thanks

How much is it leaking and from where? You could try a stop leak additive first, mine was leaking fairly significantly but after trying a few different products it's now fixed. The product that fixed mine was Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak.
If the seals are too bad you can replace yourself - there's a few threads on here how to do it, no specialist tools required.

Bird was leaking ... pump reservoir was actually empty... before "Dega". I refilled it with PS fluid with stop leak and off we went to Georgia/Alabama in October and it's still at the same level now in August. Seems the input seal started leaking, as it had gone oval from column shaft weight.. and the stop leak swelled it back into place.
