I have a Federal and was looking at seal kits Rock Auto and they only list Saginaw or Chrysler. So are the TRW and Federal both Chrysler and do they share the seal kits?

Edelmann 8507 Federal PS Pump Seal Kit is one that works from Rock Auto. I have used it. TRW is different despite the same appearance. Many sites confuse Chrysler/TRW and Federal.

If you look in a service manual, you'll also find, there's 3 different 'sized' pumps. One for SBs, two for BBs. Each size takes a different seal kit.

Lovely, nothing is simple is it!

My car is 74 with a 68 383, god knows where the pump is from. I took a chance and ordered the Chrysler kit listed for big blocks. It’s a gates #351270 kit. No plans on going anywhere soon with weather here so I might just pull the pump tonight and have a proper look.

Is there a way to identify which size pump I have, then which kit I need if the above wont work.

It looks like it’s leaking from the large seal where the pump meets the reservoir, are these all the same size at least??

Book will show the signs...how to tell which size. The pump can needs to be in good shape to seal. I had to do some work on mine.

I 'think' they will be a same size...just an o-ring. Main difference in the kits is the shaft seal size.

Above is not true for Federal. There is only one Federal pump size and kit. The TRW type had different sizes. But that is a different pump. If you have the threaded shaft you have the Federal.

For TRW the different size was the capacity and that was can size so there would be different sized O ring. A google search will tell you how to distinguish the Federal which became Standard with the Saginaw around 69. TRW was the early pump type hence why different sizes based on car size.

Here is something I put on the Web a while to go to help:

In 1967 the Federal pump is introduced and the parts manual in 67 and 68 clearly describe them and how to tell the difference.

4 pumps used
.94L Key shaft Saginaw (oval filler tube)
.96L Solid end shaft 4 5/8” ID reservoir TRW Small Pump
1.06L 3/8” threaded internal hole shaft 4 7/8” ID reservoir (The Federal)
1.20L Hex Hole shaft 5 1/8” ID reservoir TRW Large Pump

There is also good pictures on the internet of the back of the Federal versus TRW pumps to help tell the difference. Without a front or back view you cannot tell the difference.

Also TRW cap is different than the Federal, but they interchange. Most caps I see are Federal, even on TRW pumps. Only matter for OEM grading.

What I have seen is the Thompson/TRW pumps (both small and large) that I have seen have TRW cast into the pump. The Federal has 2537955 cast in the pump.

The clear distinction between the similar looking TRW and Federal is the diameter of the 3 pumps. NOT interchangeable. Also Bracket mounting, since the back is different between TRW and Federal. And if the shafts are different diameter, pulley exchanges will not work either.
TRW was a vane type pump and Federal roller pin type, so each had its own repair kit.

I already had a google and mine seems to be the federal. Also sure it has numbers cast on front of the pump.

I’ll pull it later to have a look. Will gates kit be ok if I have the federal then?

Did you type number correct? The Gates 351170 listed as Chrysler is correct for Federal Pump.

If you run into any more problems you can give 'steer n gear' a call... They were able to get me the right parts to reseal my pump and gearbox
