Stick welding help/////

Im getting ready to weld the brackets for a buddy seat in
my 65 Coronet. I bought a cheapo arc welder "arcCaptain 130".
I was curious if anyone might know a general amperage to use...floorpan is pretty thin.
Thanks in advance !!!
A lot depends on the electrode size......1/8" or 3/16".....and material......60105P (red wire), 7018 LH, 7024 (jet wire) and the thickness of the base netal....which amperage is used......the cheap welders usually don't have any current limiting or current smoothing capabilities and the weld appearance is sort of shaggy or un even. MIG is OK, TIG is best (with the correct filler metal) easy to control, both need a shield gas 75/25 argon/ CO2 mix......just my opinion......

Little pricey but this thing works like a champ. Does all 3, mig, tig and stick but I use for mig. Keeps up with any machine in same ballpark. My daughter (yes) welds and paints cars for a living and says it runs with anything she’s used!

UNLIMITED 200 Professional Multiprocess Welder with 120/240V Input

But I love it and has a chart right on the side for metal and heat! Yeah I agree, don’t stick body panels

Good luck!

Thnx RJ... used e6013 stick. They arent pretty to say the least but
wont be seen unless they take it apart. Thnx for the info..I will have to
upgrade if I run into similar projects.

be doin in the future. The cheapo did the job for the
most part..not pretty...(probly just my ablility) but welds
are holding...so far...lol

I’m a retired wood tick and welded metal studs back in the day. We used 1/16 6013 rods an ran 90/100 amps. To many years ago to remember what gauge the studs are. Keep the rod close, drag it on the metal.

(edit they are 12 gauge)

What's a wood tick?

A carpenter.

I worked on almost every casino on the Strip and retired from the carpenters and operators in 2001.
I worked as a carpenter too building houses starting at the age of 14.....and never heard that term lol

Nail bender is one I’ve heard not a wood tick— funny to hear nick names like that.

Long story, sort version:

I was the rigger/radio man for the cranes for the high rise construction in Vegas. Being all union in Vegas the Iron works had an issue with a carpenter signaling their material on the job sites. I built 95% of the casino’s on the Strip.

One of the out of town rod busters always lipped off about it and when he needed something moved he would start yelling “where’s that wood tick at” so it kinda became the local slang term for carpenter on the Strip.
