I often see it brought up in other thread so I was wondering. How many people actually still drag race on the street. I mean actual signaled start pre determined distance all out drag racing. I would think most would be I did it when I was a kid but don't anymore. I was just curious as to how many still do and what age bracket you are if you do 18-20, 20-30, 40-50 etc. I do not street race. Not worth the safety risk or losing my CDL for me.

I haven't done it since the late 70's early 80's.A small town in iowa where i worked in(independence) we used to go cruising around then we would go out to a blacktop road a couple miles out .We had a starting/finish line all set up. That was more for grudge races. In another town (waterloo) when we were allowed to go cruising after the drive-in theater was done playing the movie for the night, everybody would race light to light. But a lot of business's didn't want anybody hanging around in their parking lot, so the cruising scene pretty much phased itself out. Back then i was 17-22 years old. Marraige, kids, job took care of my cruising days here. Like you, i have to watch out what happens to my CDL.

man , i havent done any real good street racing since the 90s. i guess i finally learned my lesson after too many tickets.

not to mention i outgrew it and now take other peoples lives into consideration. a good green light holeshot is cool now and then, but i dont do burnouts or exceed the speed limit.

Used to do some street racing back in the late 60s-early 70s. Not very smart but at least we would go way out of town on deserted country roads to race. Seems to be a lot of street racing south of Seattle in the Kent valley. Mostly kids in their rice rockets. Sometimes 50 to 100+ cars will show up. They have had a few nasty crashes with some fatalities. Not real smart. Especially when you consider that there is a really good track in the area that they could race brackets a couple of nights a week in the summer. Guess they don't like the rules. Safety equipment, no drugs, no alcohol etc.

We had a McDonalds and and Burger King about a half mile from a limited access highway. Races were done from a certain light post to another one. Races were stated by a 3rd car parked on the side who would push their brake 3 times to act as the tree. This was late 80s.

62 years old and still run at a light if conditions are right....BUT....as We did it in the old days, I back off when ahead, behind or if somthing comes up....usually less than a block in distance...unlike the fast and furious crowd that race for miles.. and...almost every time, within a few hundred feet, You know who has the better car so why keep it up

Haven't done any since the early '80s. Now traffic is worse, drivers are worse & the laws are much harsher.

Street racing was "supported" by local law enforcement up until the early 80s or thereabouts. We used to have a deputy that would block off part of I-16 west, just east of Macon for about an hour and let us grudge match right on the interstate. Not to mention "spur 19" in Bibb County. We could go out there almost anytime like test and tune. In fact, the 1320 is still marked off out there to this day. Conjestion and population has become such, that it is impossible so do what we did 30 plus years ago.

Haven't since the early 80's. Back in the day out on a county road in the desert by the airport we had a 1/4 mile marked out with painted stripes. Here nowdays if they bust ya for street racing they impound your car and then they sell it. We do have Friday night street car drags at the local track. The State Troopers take their Chargers out so we can race them. Pretty cool.

I still do the stop-lite blasts from time to time, when it seem safe enough, but no-more real "street races", I grew out of that when, kids, houses, businesses were all growing & racing at the track was much safer, with no law enforcement issues, especially the types/speed of cars we were using, running multiple carbs, open exhaust, N20 or Blowers slicks, caged, tubbed & tinned, back halfed or even full chassis cars, some even in mid 8's & 9's or even 10's on the street, there were also the regular 13-14 second musclecars too, back in the hay day, in retrospect it was really pretty dumb, but I wouldn't change a thing from my youth, we had a blast, we weren't out doing drugs just playing with fast cars, in Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, Livermore, Brentwood, Antioch, Pittsburgh, Fairfield, Oakland Ca. & other areas mostly, in the mid 70's-early 80's, from age 16-22 y/o allot of guys/gals & cars from the local weekly cruises back then, in the thousands every Fri/Sat weekend, there was a few really bad wrecks, no fatalities that I remember, some really messed up cars & some serious money changing hands, but my memory isn't what is once was either...

we even had a race in Oriville area that had some 7 second Outlaw Pro Stock N20 cars & Top Sportsman cars from the early 80's "Oriville Rural Nationals" orginized by a friend {Me & Jim C. our Assn. pres. from Concord} Mike M. who lived in the area & was part of our Calif. Outlaw Prostock Racing Assn....

I remember seeing on one of the news magazine tv shows a few years back that somewhere was setting up a legal race area to prevent illeagal street racing. I want to say it was in CA or somewhere out west. They had on old strip or closed airport or something. If I remember right there was a couple of fatal accidents and they knew they would never stop all the racers so they set up an area for them. It was all tuner cars that they showed.

There was a documentary on nat geo recently all about the street racing scene. They focused on the import kids in the pacific northwest area and the LA scene. The groups of kids in the Seattle are were nothing more than hopped up hond crap. Mostly immitgrants or illegals it seemed like. The LA scene was the real deal. Those guys were lining up 9 second cars right there in broad daylight. Yanking the front wheels way off the ground.

did it from early 80's through mid 90's.won lots of money and had some bad *** cars.(once got a ticket for doing 152 mph in a 35 zone!)mid 90's here in vegas got out of control with drug dealers running juced truck's and cars for $10,000 plus per race.cops cracked down and most of the racing is done at our fantastic speedway.still see on the news, here and there, big wrecks from suposed street racing.i think it is not anything like it used to be,just some guys lining up there street cars.have not heard of any street racing scene for a long time now.

Funny you mentioned $10,000.
Took the WOMANATOR down to the gut in Salem(my State).
Ran Ricky the Rice racer.
Unloaded the car from the trailer son took the trailer down Passed where we would finish and slow down.
We each handed the money to a third party.
Ran the race, slowed down enough to load the car in the trailer.
My other twin shut the trailer up with me still in the car.
First twin took off with me in the trailer.
2nd twin grabbed the cash and we met back up at the shop.
Street racing is still alive.
Sorry Ricky

Still going on in Chattanooga. They video taped one night of racing and posted it on the web. Then setup another night of racing on a web site. I guess they didn't count on the local police reading the web site. A few were busted. You can see the video in the link. You can go to the streetfire web site and see of kinds of street racing.

One of my favorite street racing is watching this 65 belvedere. I love listening to the 383 pulling away.

As far as a place like the old days we had marked off and we did it frequently, no.. Its not something i would ever do again. It was fun back then but dum it was to, and getting caught at it once, i never did do it again.

cant imagine what it would cost now a days if caught!!

I did back in the 80's in some of the areas Budnicks mentioned. About the only thing I can do now for a quick test is to get on the fwy then slow way down and hit it. These days I don't think I would do it. Back then it was a pretty regular event and we had a feel where the cops might be. I guess were were more tuned in to that scene but not anymore.

I take it to the track now.... jail time isnt appealing to me...
Plenty of street legal drags now at the tracks for cheap money , to many stupid people on the streets.

Throughout The Late 60's And 70's I Did It Continually! After Awhile You Kind Of Grow Out Of It! NOT! At My Age I Still Nail That Thing And Still Get A Buzz Out Of It!
