I am trying to decide what to do with my 69 Roadrunner. I currently have a stock 383 with roughly 3000 miles since the rebuild. The car made 260 hp 305 torque on the wheel dyno with a 4speed. I was looking at building a 471 stroker with a 400 block. I have a 400 block, but after looking at the cost it was not going to be cheap. It would cost around $8000 for the complete build. My other option was getting more hp out of the 383 and trying to keep the cost down. I will have to look at pulling the heads and looking at the compression ratio and what cam was used. I paid for a stock rebuild and I am not sure if that is what I got. I am running a stock edelbrock 650 avs carb. If I keep the stock manifolds, upgrade the intake to a mopar dp4b, upgrade the carb, cam and port the stock 906 heads and add bigger valves. Will I see big improvements?

my opinion? add a cam and some stealth heads to the motor along with a intake and a holley. throw some tti headers in the mix and let it eat

260hp at wheels is about right for stock give or take a few HP. Might help to know how much you want to spend.

My buddy took his 383 and stroked it to a 472..he just added bigger valves and did home made port and polishing..He runs low 12,s..Wanna sell the 400?

383

Well I don't mind spending around $3000. Since I have an intake. I will need to get the heads done. Buy a carb and cam. Here is a good article I found with upgrading a 383.

thats an old article. i know the guys from westech and we have all aged. some better than others.

anyway; price out the project their way in the article and make a decision. they know their stuff. they built me an engine about a year ago.

good luck:headbang: keep us posted.

I built my 451 for under 5K....
If youre going to go 471 and get all new stuff from a stroker kit, then yeah, its gonna cost you.
But if you want to build a 451 on the cheap, you can.
Check out the 451 manifesto.

Personally, if I just had a motor rebuilt, Id keep it. But Im cheap...lol.
X2 on what Gremlin said....

Well that is what I am wishing for another 100hp with some more torque. 1badgtx sorry the block it is not for sale at this time. I made the mistake and should have spent the extra money on the rebuild at the beginning.

If I wanted to buy a carb to use with either engines what does everyone recommend? I have the 650 avs edelbrock and I am very happy with it. Except for hard starting after the engine is hot, because of fuel boiling off in the carb.

780-850 holley:headbang::headbang:

Its best to size the carb once you know where you are going to be on power. But as shag said, you will probably end up in the 780-850 range.

X2

your biggest gain for h.p. is in the heads, then you have to make a combo that flows.
now start scrongeing for the 400. take your time and the costs will be reasonable. rick

p.s. whats your gear ratio

My gear ratio is 3:91, I may switch back to the original 3:55. Shag766 I sent you a pm.

I'm thinking for your price range a set of aftermarket heads (edelbrock, stealth, etc) with a good comp cams camshaft or better yet racer brown camshaft, and maybe a 750 demon carb? Big tube headers would help. Might want to look into an ignition system along with this. You could always bottle feed it too......laughing gas!
Someone good to talk to is Don at FBO (4secondsflat.com). They do complete ignition systems with distributors using stock mopar distributor with aftermarket guts in them that turn past 10,000 rpm. Also sell LOTS of Mopar stuff for good prices.
Good luck though!

If I upgrade the 383, which heads should I buy edelbrocks or 440 source. Will the edelbrocks cause any issues with the factory alternator alingment? What size TTI Headers do I need to purchase. Keep in mind I would like to reuse the heads, headers and carb if I decide down the road to build a 451/471 stroker. What size exhaust pipes should I use? I am currently running 2 1/4 H pipe with 2 1/4 flowmasters 50 series.

The eddy heads everything bolts up fine. Use 1 7/8" headers. 3" pipes. But I ran 2.25 for a long time with no real issues on a 496 stroker.

Okay I will order the 1 7/8 tti headers. Know the next big question is on the heads. I know that this subject has been talked about before. What heads are better for my 383 upgrade? 440 source or Edelbrocks? Remember that I may use these heads for my stroker build down the road. So I only want to buy once.

The eddys are more refined out of the box and will require generally speaking less attention. Although no matter what you choose they will need inspecting and probably some work before you go bolting them on.

Eddy's are made in USA. I don't know where the stealths are made.

I am sure I am opening myself up for some flaming here... But any google search on Stealth heads versus Eddy heads should be enough to scare you into the Eddy's.

I bought Eddy heads for my 383 build. Found that the parts in them from the factory weren't quite up to par for what we wanted so I sent them back & got their bare castings & loaded them up myself. Also had some port work done. Either et you go with just have them checked out for your application, ie; springs (which was the biggest issue for me), etc.
Either head would work fine, even the eddy's will work out of the box and maybe use them as-is for now for cost reasons & go through them when you build your stroker! Save the $ for later on you know?
Good luck!
