Can new lifters be put in a SB 318 without taking off the heads?
 
Yes. The intake has to come off. I think. I don't mess with small blocks that much. Cant remember if there is enough room in the head to pull the lifterw through.
 
That's not a stupid question.

Yes, intake has to come off. Rockers and shafts will have to come out to get the pushrods out, then the lifters can come out. If they're not varnished-up a fairly strong magnet will be helpful.

Make sure the pushrods go back into thier original location. You can buy a valvetrain organizer, but a shoebox lid or something similar will work too.
