Summit Orange Box

I buy the Mopar Orange Box from Glendora Dodge for
the same money or less. I run it on my cars and I know how
well it works.

I'm gonna stick my neck out and say it is probably OK....but there are likely better ones out there.

The fact that it doesn't say "Made in America/USA" or anything suggests it is made in China.

I'll bet that @HALIFAXHOPS wouldn't use one. Maybe try him for a good tested & proven used ECU?

I'd imagine it was a parts store one painted orange. Says good to 6800 rpm. Are stock ones not good to that much?

From what I see in the picture in the link for the Summit unit, what should be a JDEC TO-3 style transistor looks like a cosmetic fake (the silver color thing) .
A real TO-3 case transistor would not have the overly rounded edges. (See below pix ) Real TO-3 style transistors, like in the original 60's built units, actually do the switching on/off of the current to the coil. They do get hot, add the heat of the engine compartment, the transistor must be able to handle all that.
On the Summit unit, it's likely that there is a physically smaller transistor with minimal heat sinking of the internal circuit board likely to fail similar to the TO_126 or TO-220 case style. The fake transistor case and screws is intended to make it like like a factory built unit.
I would look for a NOS unit or something from Halifaxhops that's better built than this one. Personally, in my 66 Charger w/ electronic ignition, I carry in the trunk what I refer to a " the survival kit " that includes a spare orange box, spare coil. If either fails, easy to swap out and be on your way...

Some horror ecu's in here.

Seems like Mopar outsourced there ECU; s around 2008 or so. All the kits that are made for MP have the fake ones in there. I won't touch anything made after 95 or so.

I've had a real Mopar orange box that died apart to draw a schematic of the guts out of my own curiosity The one you sliced open appears to have about 80% less parts than the real deal. Looks like whoever built that one used a minimal design concept. Doubt it has much longevity..

I remember peeling a VR apart because it seemed like it was full of sand. Just had a tiny microchip in

I had one a while back that just oozed black sticky potting liquid.....didn't seem right to me.

An OG chrome box? I have one of those in my stash along with a rev n nator. Have used the chrome for ten years they perform well.
