well...my "friend recommended" tech has had my car for over a month!!! and all he has done was the carb, intake and valley pan. (which i would assume would take no more than 3hrs). He told me two weeks ago he'd have my list of things done by this past week. I waited until friday night to call him, and he said he was sick this past week so no work was done..still has to set timing, set up tach...I am getting frustrated!!!! but he charges next to nothing for labor. So how far do i push him-it's spring and i wanna drive my car...
For those that are going to tell me, i should work on it myself-I am not mechanically inclined, wish i was..as my passion for cars existed from infancy. I was naming cars before making full sentences (as per my mother).
SO...how do I nicely tell this guy that he's gotta step it up??:angryfire:

If it was me I would tell him that on (insert date here) I'm comming over to get my car finished or not.

If he can't complete work that should only take a day or two in a month then take it somewhere else and pay the extra money.

he works for the State Police motor pool, and works out of his home garage...so i don't think that he's being shady...a bit lazy yes. I agree with you.

I think i would explain to him just as you have hear to us. He should understand what you have and what spring is about. You don't need to take a club while you tell him, just be friendly about it again, i know, but you get more with sugar.. I haven't as yet been out for my first ride either, im my own hold up, well a broken piece on a project i didnt expect. Good luck, if hes feelin better it shouldn't take long to adjust the timing and things. :argue:

yeah...i guess my work ethic is stronger than some. there were minor items on the list that while he had it, i figured would be no biggie... (front valance spoiler, adjust front valance, add 383 decals over side marker lights). At least he could have done that, while waiting for the carb to come or something?? just annoyed.

I've always tried to be nice to people until I know for sure that they are screwing over me and for the most part, I wasn't being screwed over. I agree with what Ron 73 said. Also, how did you not learn to work on cars when you have this passion for them? I know some who are that way but taking small steps helps get the mechanical side working. I did the same thing you did with being car crazy at a very young age. Building model cars helped get me started working with my hands I guess but I always had building blocks, erector sets etc before the models.....but I never got any Legos damnit lol

I think I would wait till you really cant wait any longer. If your happy with his results and he is a fair guy than it is worth the wait. Especially with all the horror stories of people working on cars. Good luck.

i am quite absent-minded,:iamwithstupid: and my ADHD leaves me very little patience...my skills are knowing people with skills:headbang:... i have been a bartender for over 20 years, and at the same spot for the past 15yrs, so i have taken good care of customers that are now friends...i would talk about my police buddies and PBA Family Member Cards that have gotten me out of significant situations..but Karma's a bitch and have to drive out to Brooklyn NY later, don't wanna jinx it.

nah...never been one to medicate, i'd rather live with my shortcomings and learn how to cope/manage with it

:argue:...Hi...The more you can do on your own to a car,the more that car becomes you and you and your car share a physical bond...read some of these posts here...old and new and you can gain a simple understanding of some of the mechanical stuff that you yourself can do...I get frustrated at times working on my 1973 RR... I try to do all I can by myself...my husband has his guitar thing and although he is supportive I cannot rely on his schedule to plan for him to help me...a lot of the time I stick a small flashlight in my mouth and tackle the electrical things alone...it is a super great feeling when it comes together and you accomplish things on your own...you say you are not mechanical but if you can read, then you can reason....Marla...

Remember, he maybe up to his neck in ALLEY-gators, especially if he's doin work on state vehicles.. But you should also explain to him that you too are under a stop watch...and if it's to much could he recommend a partner that could complete the job...that just may light a fire under his behind...

1st thing is I would say buy a Factory Service Manual for your specific year, make & model of car, read up on what it takes to do some of the easy stuff, it's really not that hard... What the guy has already done is about a hours worth of work at best, go get the car & if you don't know or can't do it yourself, step up & learn how to, or just find some better more motovated mechanic to do what you need... The worst thing if your into cars, is depending on others to do work or help with your project, they don't have your same inerest in the project, especially if they aren't making much money at it, "not always" but it seems, they are almost always flakes, lazy & sometimes overcharge... It's really time to start learning some of the more simple/basic stuff, that you want to do, buy some basic tools, learn by doing, not by paying someone else to do it, there are a ton of websites, books, DVD's & TV shows on how to stuff you can access, you will reap the benefits... Fill your Library Before you Fill your Garage... Just My Opinion

I`d go get it and bring it home ,and work on it your self ,he cant be that good of a state trooper mech. taking this long, just a thought .

sonny black :glasses9: I think its the uniform that marla has on with just a little skin showing you no the old cheese cake look:toothy11: have a good one

a little friendly nudge might be setting a mutual time together with him working on your car. the plus side is you get a little hands on time also.

well...had a good conversation with Bob today. He assured me that I will have her back this Sunday complete! I am keeping positive thoughts...

You don't "have to" learn sometime, but wow, you should.

It's very rewarding, folks here can walk you through the work you are talking about, it's really not difficult.

Marla, is that a 53 chevy? Sweet!

Good luck !!

That's good news... But I would still go over & see what he's doing & make your presense know... It may keep him motovated to finish, finally... Maybe you can learn something while your there watching...
