I would like to purchase a period correct, fully restored carburetor for my 440/auto Superbird. Where should I look or who would have one?
Thank you in advance.

Carter 4738S. I just did a search and there's one on ebay, for over a grand, but it's dated F0 (June 1970), which would be way late for a Superbird. I don't know if you're into date codes, so I'm just pointing it out. If you are, you should be looking for something dated around H9, J9.

@wilky70, if your intent is to make the car correct as possible for when the car was built, then you will be looking for the correct casting date on the carb mounting base in addition to the correct part number. As @SgtSuperbird, notes that the H9. J9 and K9 would be the correct window for the Superbird production run, the "I" was not used. Once you find the correct carb, then you can start the search of finding someone that can rebuild the carb for you. Finding a ready to bolt on restored carb with the correct date code would be your super lucky day. They are out there, just got to chase down all of the leads and see what turns up.

A 4738S Carb just got posted on this site.

I found it on eBay, it's a little rough, I would like to hang in there for a better one. Thank you for for finding it.

You sure that's not a 8 vs a 2... No way you have a 1962 carb on there!
Probably is. I have a detailed binder of pictures that came with the car. The last owner described it as 4615 SA L2. Looking at the pictures it could be an 8. His documentation says 383 M/T Superbee 2nd week of December.

The 4615S was used on 69 383 4 speed applications. Since it has an "A" following the 4615S, that identifies the carb as an over the counter service replacement. The "L2" identifies the casting date as being a November of 72 production.

The addition of letter "A" after the 4615S means an engineering change due to some revision to the basic carb design.....could be a metering change or an external part included/removed but it's an engineering change NOT a service replacement carb. The "S" is Carter's means assembly.......

@RJRENTON, it was my understanding that a AVS or AFB never used the "SA" identification on an assembly line carb? So is it possible that say a later production car of that model year might have an "SA" carb installed on the assembly line? Either way, with the "L2" date, it would be an over the counter piece as a service replacement piece.
