Can't tell by just looking at the case can you spin the axles? If so turn one and if the other turns the same direction it's a sure grip

That's not always the way it goes. Jack it up and if both wheels turn in the same direction, it might be a SG. Put one wheel on the ground with the trans still in neutral, try and turn the one that's still off the ground. If it turn but is really difficult, then it should be a SG but it also might be rusted up inside. Found one like that one time....a big pile of rust and it acted like a SureGrip.

rear axle is off the ground since we're still working on the car. We can spin the one side but not the other because its seized up. is it worth rebuilding if not a sure grip?

If the one wheel turns easily, it may not be a SureGrip but it just might be one that's worn. Pull it out and see just what's inside.....then go from there. Any 8 3/4 is worth fixing if it's not a total piece of junk.

I don't think it has a sure grip
If it did have a working sure grip and one side is seized...then the other side shouldn't spin either.
