Was looking at a few sure grip setups. Saw one that said cone style.. Is that the one not to get?

the cone style is not rebuildable, but the clutch style is rebuildabe.

I agree with you Johnny, They have no clutches to replace,so they say you can't rebuild them. But I learned a trick from an old machinist and have rebuilt at least a dozen cone type sure grips and have never had one come back

Do your research. The cone style can be machined to renew it, But I think I would find a place that knows how to do it before buying one that you know is bad.......................MO

The question is....What are you looking for in terms of service? The Auburn CONE type is usually smoother in operation and quieter. If you drive moderately and don't intend to drag race with slicks all the time, it will last a long time. People bash them for not being rebuildable but a new one in a car driven maybe 2000 miles a year, only a few burnouts a year? It may outlive YOU, If you are a hard core throttle jockey, maybe look into something more durable or rebuildable.

The original Spicer powr lok is the way to do fully serviceable

I found a clutch type that I'm going to purchase. A new clutch set is pretty reasonable. I think that is what I'm looking for. Not that I plan on doing burnouts or anything like that. But just seeing the roadrunner leaving a single tire mark is quite sad. To be honest the car dosent see alot of mileage so I thought about a mini spool. But found a 68 sure grip at a decent price. And with a new set of bearings and new clutches I think I would come out ahead. I can do the work but might need some help when building the sure grip. I have the Shop manual so I guess that would help. I have never worked on a differential other than to just swap the carrier out with another. Which is quite easy.

I want to use the 3.23 gears but with the current setup it seems there is some slack in the carrier somewhere. And it clunks when you go from fwd to reverse. I know its not the trans, driveshaft or the ujoints. It has to be in the carrier. Also in the rearend it has new axles and green bearings. So Its not coming from there either. One way or another it needs to be sorted out.

I just purchased this Sure Grip.. It has a late 67 date cast on it.
