1967 Coronet, 8-3/4 w green bearings, 3.73 gears n Sure grip. Only about 600 miles on everything so far. Normal around town driving, nothing to report. Drive for about 10 miles, no turns, slow down and make left turn, hear loud clunking from rear and physically feel an almost binding feel, then it stops and drives normal. All fluids good with Motorcraft friction modifier. Everything from Dr Diff. Is this normal?

Definitely not normal. Can you determine if it is in the center chunk or the wheel bearing?

on my was the front universal join on driveshaft .I replaced both. end of problem. hope this will help you.

Not yet. I've only noticed it 3 times and while turning left. Not really sure how to determine, doesn't always happen and on jackstands, everything feels normal.

Has brand new driveshaft and u-joints. All replaced at same time when Gearvendor o/d went in.

When assembling a suregrip clutch pack you coat the disk in the Motorcraft Friction Modifier. Maybe if it wasn't done or set in storage for a long time the Modifier dried out.

You could try doing some slow figure eights in a parking lot to get the clutches coated again. Lack of friction modifier will cause noises when turning.

I didn't assemble it. Had my transmission shop do it. I installed it in rear diff though. I do not remember it seeming to be lubed at all though. I installed it the day I got it back from shop and filled it within 2 days. But it sat for about 3 months before I got it on the road.

Try doing some slow figure eights in a parking lot. If it doesn't go away I'd be contacting the shop.

the lub needs to get into all the plates. you need to do some tight turns both ways (left and right ) to work in the lub. you did fill the rear after you assembled it didnt you?

Well I think I found the issue. When I had the driveshaft made n installed, the pinion yoke was replace with much larger billet one to match the Gearvendor one. When the original was removed, the shop noticed that the previous shop had smashed the seal n spring inside the seal lip when they installed it. New seal and yoke installed by driveshaft shop. Well, I decided to drain my fluid. I removed fill plug and put my finger inside and fluid was about an inch below opening. I had drilled n tapped a 1/4 npt hole at bottom of dif before installing 3rd member. Plug has magnet. Removed drain plug and had normal metal fuzz from new gears. Also had a small piece of the pinched pinion seal spring. Reinstalled drain plug, 1 bottle of Ford Friction Modifier, filled w gear oil until fluid came out fill hole. Installed fill plug and took it for a drive. Noticeable reduction in whine and didn't encounter the the clunk or noise when slowed n turning. Apparently they did not drain the rear diff when they changed the seal and pinion yoke and did not top off after.

Diesel, Was that you i saw at the K9 show? I was on my way over to introduce myself after the demo, and you were gone.

They may not have even used friction modifier.
I had put in a bottle when I installed the 3rd member. But I didn't smell anything when I drained it. Now I know it has the proper amounts of everything. Kinda sucks when you have to check a professional shop's work.
