I just picked up a 4 door 68 satellite thats going to be my daily driver. It has an 8 3/4 rear end and i'm pretty sure it does not have suregrip. Is it possible to tell from looking at the rear end if it has suregrip? If it doesnt is it possible to retro fit it with sure grip in this rear end or do I need to swap out the whole rear end with one set up with suregrip?

thanks in advance.....

you can buy a center chunk with the sure grip or add the sure grip unit to your differential carrier in a couple hours

Is the fender tag still on the car ? That will tell you if it at least came with a SG from the factory. Look at the bolts holding the pumkin in the housing. If it hasn't been previously cracked open, there should be a metal tag with your info on it.

cant you just spin it off the ground and if both tires turn the same way its suregrip and counterrotation is open

thanks for the quick replies. this is a cool place to hang out :)

I'll check tomorrow to see if its there. Is there an aftermarket kit that is sold to convert to suregrip or do you just have to get the parts individually?

There are several sure grips available. There is even a "locker" setup that replaces the spider gears in the open carrier. Works well on a friend's 12.0 Max Wedge car

richmond sells one that they say is installable with basic tools think its called a trackloc

I like randy's ring and pinion but it might just be the advertising! I do hear they have good stuff though. http://www.ringpinion.com/

Summit has the best prices. Jack one rear wheel off of the ground car in neutral if you can turn the wheel buy hand its open, if not its a sure grip.

For about 70$ you can rebuild the suregrip if it's not the cone style.

We've rebuild my cone-style suregrip in my RR for a couple of bucks. Well...some machinework and a new gasketset. Could be some more then $70 though...
