Modern distributor only has +&- for hook ups. Where/how do you hook up the tach in this situation?

Your running the MSD ready to run distrib right?
MSD should have a gray wire for the tach
HEI has a tach output in the cap where the +/- connect

Not an MSD. its a 2 wire aftermarket job.

If the dist. runs on straight 12v and not thru the ballast resistor one wire would connect to a 12v source that is hot with the key in the run position and the cranking position. The other wire would go to the neg side of the coil where the tack trigger wire would go I would think. The pos side of the coil should have the correct power to it.

Do not HEI distributor have internal coils?

Yep...now that I think of it....isn't the HEI a GM-type? I seem to recall some old Trans Am & Firebirds I had having the coil up inside the distributor cap.
