NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine (AP) — Police armed with assault rifles descended on a Maine man's home after members of a tree removal crew he'd told to clear off his property reported that he had a gun.
Turns out the "gun" the tree crew had seen on Michael Smith of Norridgewock was just a life-sized tattoo of a handgun on his stomach.
Smith, who works nights, was asleep when the tree crew contracted by a utility to trim branches near power lines, woke him up at about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
He went outside shirtless and yelled at the workers to leave. When he's not wearing a shirt, the tattoo looks like a gun tucked into his waistband.

I've seen those and they do look real from a distance.....just another moron depending on how you look at it. If I saw someone with a gun sticking out of their pants, I would at least make sure it was real before running but I don't live in Maine either!

I don't get why you would want to look like you are carrying a gun when you're not. Sound like a good way to get shot.

I don't get why people get inked up....especially the ones that cover themselves from head to toe but to each their own.

Maybe the guy's not a brainiac, but to have the freakin SWAT team come onto his property for no real reason is just unreal and totally uncalled for. A picture of a weapon is not a weapon just like a pointed finger, a banana, or a piece of paper cut into an "L" shape is not a weapon. Over reaction by law enforcement is becoming the norm. Maybe they ought to look at the person who called 911 for a False Reporting charge.

Your right, whatever state you live in, This crap is getting on-going to some kind of sitcom, some say they hate hearing about it but they cant wait to see whats next! Im not talking about you posting it Coronet 14, im talking about whats going on on every internet site you go to, or email platform you run.

I agree, when I was a kid, who would care! and cops showing up with assault weapons? Did they charge his stomach for displaying a weapon? these cops got way too much time on their hands. Not to mention the fools in the trees. They can't tell the difference between a tattoo
and a real gun? Where I live, it would have been called the looney tunes hour. I hope I didn't offend anyone, just my take
on it.

Especially criminals. If you are a criminal, why would you want to make yourself easier to identify? Stupid.

That's not the case here. The case is you had a bunch of tree trimmers hired by the electric company out trimming branches away from power lines, and an angry guy comes out of his house, yelling God knows what at them (I doubt anything nice), and telling them to get off his property (which is most likely not his property and they were likely on an easement owned by the city or power company). And while that tattoo may not look like a real gun close up, they were likely seeing it from 20-30 feet away where it does. So the case was you had workers legally doing their job who are confronted by an angry guy who's ordering them to leave and who's brandishing a pistol. You can't fault the guys for calling the cops on that one.

Next you have the cops receiving a call of an angry man brandishing a handgun, yelling/cursing while standing shirtless in public. How many cops are going to think "oh, I'll bet this is a guy who got woke up, wasn't happy about it, and has a tattoo of gun and not a real gun. I mean, everyone has gun tattoos right?" I think the answer would be zero. :) As far as they know they've got a guy with a real gun standing and screaming shirtless in public, which tends to be more indicative of drunk or high nutjob more than tired worker with a gun tattoo, so who gets those calls... the SWAT guys.

LOL, mind you shirtless in Maine in March.

As much as I dislike all the tattoo stuff, I just don't get it myself, but too each their own... This is way overreacting by both parties !! , it seems an abuse of power too... Too me, it seams the rude/pissed alleged gun tattooed dirt-bag & the panty waist tree trimmers, scared of their own shadows, that will often trim the wrong trees off the power-line easement {happens here all the time} & on someone's private property... Sounds like both people were in the right, just a little decorum, from both side would be smart... I'd bet the tattooed guy, no doubt probably has a criminal record too {who/what dumba$$ would do a tattoo like that in the 1st place}, so the cops/SWAT side with the tree guys, a little over kill to send the SWAT Team & a stupid way overreaction.... Just having a tattoo that allegedly looks like a real gun in his belt line {stupid as it is}, IMHFO it still isn't brandishing a gun...

All I have to say is, "only in Maine!"

Not really, but we certainly have our share of weird stories!

If I had time, I got a bunch of em!

LOL... Maine is mild in comparison to all the Skittle Farten', Rainbow Humpen', Tree Huggen', Eco-Nazi's crowd that we got here in the coastal inner-cites/regions of Calif.

My BIL's now X called the cops one day and told them he was holed up in the house with a ton of weapons and threatening suicide and hurting her. They showed up in full swat to get him out and arrest him and spent a month in solitaire before someone realized that it wasn't him that was the problem. He has a few weapons but pretty much no more than I do which is nothing crazy. He even answered the door and asked what was going on. At that point they slammed him to the ground and cuffed him. All of this happened to a war vet that spent two tours in Nam with no prior criminal record! If it were me, the first chance I had to take her head off.......

They suspected he had a brain, too, but when he removed his hat there was no tattoo.

If I was the tree trimmer, I would have said hey! : draw that pistol boy! if not, well,,,put a shirt on!
I would not have called the cops like a woosey!LOL

Because they like being tribal! I don't get it either, I guess we're getting to old?
