TDC Question?

I've got a 74 Charger SE with a Stock 318, 360-2bbl Intake & Holley 2bbl Carb.

Question is: If both lifters are closed and mark is at 0", should the Rotor be pointin at #1 or down the middle? If down the middle, do I need to move the slot back?

index to #1 cylinder and time after starting.dont matter which way dist is pointing as long as car starts and can be timed.

K, I noticed the dizzy cap has #1 marked underneath the cap, that's where #1 wire should be right.

Both valves closed (lifters on base circle of cam) indicates the compression stroke. Distributor rotor pointing to #1 tower ready to fire. You can arrange the plug wires so that #1 on the cap is indeed #1 cylinder. Then put wires in the firing order in the direction of distributor rotation.

Another easy way to help you out is remove the distributor and observe the key way for the distributor as it turns in the block. The key way on BB's should run down the center of the engine and can be slightly off but pretty much in the center. On SB's it will point to the #1 cylinder at an angle to the center line. Then you can align the distributor to #1 firing order. But remember you need to be on the compression stroke for an engine to fire right up although I have seen it done otherwise...cr8crshr/Tuck

K still stuck on this. At TDC Compression Stroke & 0 mark, Oil Slot & Rotor are at 12/6 o clock position. Not toward #1 cylinder. Anyway of fixin this?

all you need to do is put #1 plug wire on cap were rotor is pointing now and install the rest of the wires from there.
only way to change that alignment is to pull the oil pump drive gear assm(gear that dist fits into)and rotate it till it lines up were you want it.then do above again.

If you have a strong magnet and are lucky. I use an old Sears piston ring expander and it works on the majority of them. The expander looks like a pair of pliers but open when the grips are squeezed.
