My temp guage is acting a little erratic lately. First off I have a 70 RR with 440+6 auto. The rad is brand new & no previous leaks or known block problems. But lately The gas guage & temp guage is act very erratic when i brake to a stop. The gas guage ( tank 1/2 full ) will bounce to full & then return to known amount of gas. the temp guage will fly to overheating range then return also to normal operating temp. All wiring front to back is brand new in the car. Is it possibly the volt limiter going bad or what are some other areas to check.

Chuck

There is a volt limilter that reduces voltage to 5 volts plugged into the back of the cluster, when it is failing this can happen. Sometimes the circuit board develops a short to ground, which causes the same thing.

Those gauges did that brand new, they were an irritant then.LoL

Thank you everyone for the help. I'm going to get a new circuit board & limiter for the "bird".

Thanks
Chuck

while your at it, look over the ammeter really good. Chrysler used carboard of all things as an insulator. and double up and replace if necessary. Make sure you have good lock washers on the connections, they can come loose and will generate heat.
better safe than sorry.

I did replace the ammeter a year ago. But i will check the connections when i do the changeover. One of the reasons i'm changing it is one of the dash lights don't tighten & work.

Huh, my wife's a little erratic too, maybe her voltage limiter needs a look see. :eusa_whistle:

Anything is possible !!!

I changed the circuit board & limiter last nite. But i noticed the insulator on the ammeter guage in back of it was cracked & broken. What material can i use to make another one for it.?
I used a piece for rubber gasket & tried that. Apparently when i put everything back together 7 turned the key on, the ammeter guage went half way to the left for discharge. I don't know if the red wire was touching something or the insulator needs changed.

Any thoughts are truly appreciated.

Chuck

Would gasket material work for the insulator?

I'm still having trouble getting everything to work properly. I installed a new circuit board & RTE IVR 4 solid state limiter. The instructions for the limiter says it should have a blinking light if properly installed with no shorts to ground. Does the limiter have to have the key turned on for power or does it pull power all the time? Also the alternator guage when i turned the key on, it showed a power discharge about half way to the left on the guage. I thought maybe since i broke the insulator & used a piece of rubber gasket when i put it together it was gounding out. I redid some insulator with gasket mayerial tried again. This time the limiter didn't blink again & absolutely no movement at all on the alt guage, NONE. What am i doing wrong??? Is now something wrong with the alt guage or something else. The car is a 70 RR 440+6 auto.

You need a (mopar gauge voltage regulator) there a 3 prong rectangular plug in there $60 or you can cobble one cheaper surf around the web I got one from some where it's a common mopar problem and there's an upgrade
Or its called the instrument cluster voltage regulator and is plugged into the circuit board or it could be built in to the fuel or temp gauge also check it's not a ground arcing but 99% it's the gauge regulator if the gauges flutter

On another notorious trait...
The amp meter can be soddered because this is a weak link and should be bypassed by putting the wires on both posts together with a brass #8 bolt and nut then wrapped in tape

hard to believe, but the original card board Insulator is about the thickness of a lid on a cardboard box.. I compared thickness, and it worked for me. no rubber!

To be factory correct use a rice crispy box and a spent 45 cal. Caseing to form the washer.

1) can the alt guage be checked while in the cluster?
2) can it be bypassed if necessary or hooked up to an under dash guage?
