Here's a little quiz...can anyone spot the inherent design flaw in this file blue oval engine? Here's a hint: An $80 part failed (a part that commonly fails) in mine and cost me over 8K.
They have since redesigned it.

I'll guess this part circled....too much friction from the chain and not enough lubrication at higher RPM's....

Unless engines turn backwards down under, that's the slack side of the chain. Good try though.
With the earth's rotation and southern trade winds, I expect it would go the opposite direction. :p

If it's not the cam chain tensioner then maybe the yellow link in the chain (although that wouldn't be $80 surely). My guess is related to the cam chain in some way, either becoming slack or snapping, with resulting valve/piston interference. The Ford DOHC in Australia used plastic tensioners originally, until they started cracking.

The hydraulic chain tensioner would be my guess.

Water pump. Did well over a dozen this year alone.
Ya that's a stupid place for a water pump. Of course Cadillac put their starters under the intake in the valley. :BangHead: GM's experimental division. LOL

I’m gonna say cam phasers and timing chain. The one in my driveway needs both...

Hey, I can swap a starter on a Northstar in twenty minutes, Takes me a full day to swap a Ferd 3.5 that the water pump filled its host with coolant that took out the bottom end.

I was always taught to circle my mistakes. Just sayin'

Honda engines are just like this. Water pump same location and a pain in the *** to get to in a front wheel drive car.

ford what garbage engines , hey who in there right mind designs a 2 piece spark plug really?
another bad design is jaguar supercharger (2009 xf)remove that in place to replace the coolant hoses that run under it
12 hr job and your cursing the whole time

I'm going with the water pump, man is that the most ignorant place I've ever seen one mounted!

Winner Winner! Although it sounds like you have an unfair advantage.

55K on the 2011 Ford Edge engine. I smelled antifreeze but couldn't find a leak. Didn't take long to destroy the engine. Then Ford says, "We can charge a few thousand and just replace the water pump, but you likely have bearing damage. Wanna gamble?"

I love my F150 but Ford isn't going to get another penny out of me. And I tell my friends to do the same.

So I'm taking that when the pump seal goes the coolant runs right into the crankcase?
