We've all seen it and some of us are victims of it--OTHERS TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. DMV's nationwide now report more accidents involving "distracted driving" than drunk driving. Two of my 20 sales people have rear-ended other motorists at traffic lights while texting--it's out of control. Laws in many states prohibit the practice--but to no avail--those doing it are going to continue doing it. My solution: DISABLE THE SIGNAL IF THE PHONE IS MOVING BEYOND 5 MILES PER HOUR! If the text is THAT important, pull over--go to a parking lot--get off at the next exit--but don't concentrate on a typewritten message at 70 MPH! But this won't happen as long as the cell phone lobbies have clout in Washington. When one of the Congress suffers a loss in their family, we MAY see a proposal. Can this thread go to Washington???

Buy the way, was out with the Satellite recently and almost got rear-ended by a girl texting in a Ford Aerostar; scared me enough to pull over and let her go by.

I agree it is a serious problem. But, disabling moving cell phones is not a viable solution. What about passengers? What about people on buses or trains? What about emergency service personnel who are passengers? I think that a HUD-type display that projects the screen onto the windshield so a driver does not have to take his eyes off the road, coupled with a 100% accurate voice-controlled cell phone would be an improvement. Still would distract a driver's attention, but at least they'd have eyes on the road.

Your lucky none of those folk hit me, otherwise I'd be a rich MoFo!!! Just DON"T DO IT, PERIOD!!!!!
Just as a FYI, I've gotten hit too waiting in line at the drive up window, watched the whole thing unfold in my rear view mirror. Boy did she have a $h!t fit when I got out and started yelling at her to pay the F attention to what your doing.

I used to do some serious texting and talking on the phone while driving - on the LA freeways no less. It took many close calls and the realization that my wife was doing the same thing for us to make a pact not to use cell phones period while driving. This was a couple years before it was California law. We're much safer drivers for having done so. I have a close friend that was just looking down to press send on his text while driving on a state highway when a young kid cut across the highway in his beater. The friends wife ended up in a body cast for months with permanent problems. Neither party had insurance. If he'd had his eyes on the road he would have seen the kid ready to bolt in front of him and slowed down or swerved out of the way - instead he teboned him. The kid got all messed up as well. Texting and talking on the phone while driving is the new drunk driving. Bottom line - just don't do it!

Yea let's let big brother take over completely and disable everything!! Hell let's make the national speed limit 35, that would saves lives, 25 even more so. Make personal and mature decisions for yourself, damn the feds deciding to control more and more or my life!

People can't walk and text! What makes them think that they can do it while piloting a 3000+ pound projectile at 30-70 miles per hr.

Hang up and drive.
What's so hard about that?
Talking or texting while driving proves they are by nature bad drivers.
Don't you think?
80 MPH in the fast lane and on the phone.
Oblivious to other cars.
See it everyday.

It's not just cell phones. It's eating, putting on makeup, reading a book, newspaper, or magazine, changing the radio or iPad song while driving, having a pet that roams freely inside the vehicle, children not behaving properly, etc. Distracted driving is, or should be, about a whole lot more than just cell phones.

How about an overfull vehicle - where there are more occupants than seat belts? Can't tell you how many times I've seen a single cab pickup filled with five or six people...

Cell phones are everywhere and handy but I find them pricey and annoying that's why I don't own one. My friends text and drive while I am in the car or at a red light start texting then not notice when it turns green I wish sometimes they would wreck their cars to teach them a lesson.

So, you think laws against drinking and driving are too "Big Brother"? Laws against practicing medicine without a license?

Irresponsible people are the reasons laws go into effect......

I got Tee boned once by a young 17 year old driver who was texting. She went stright through an interesection and didnt even brake. It scared the hell out of me, but more so her. I don't belive she will ever do that again. I thank God that I was the only one in the car and it hit me on the passengers side. Make sure you teach your young ones to never text and drive.

When you get into a car... drive it. How hard is that? Don't put on make up, don't text,
It's simple... drive the car, pay attention to the road conditions and drive the ******* car. How hard is that?

We have the same problem here in sweden. Just recently the government decided to make a new law against driving and talking/texting on a cellphone. But that don´t help so much, i see people every day texting and driving, what makes a text or a phone call so important that you are willing to endanger yours and other peoples lives? Ithink there should be a kind of points system. Everytime you manage to force a car off the road (with someone texting and driving) You get 5points and after 100 points you get a discount on your next speeding ticket :sign12:

Given your attitude, I certainly am not prepared to sacrifice my life, or that of my family just because some idiot feels that he/she can drive as fast as he/she wants regardless of the condition of the vehicle.

IMO, you sound like one of those that spew forth rights, but are not willing to take responsibility for those same rights.

Guys as some of you know I got hit in a real bad car wreck 3 years ago I had a 2 level back fusion with hardware(I need another surgery still)
the girl wasn't paying attention she said.
she said she was playing with her radio but to be playing with your radio for two blocks sounds like b.s. to me . This is a real problem and people need to wake up. I lost just about every thing . My career my ability to work enjoyment in life outings I used to do like car swap meets and Turkey rod run can't do anything driving a car for more then 15 mins hurts bad ,and to make matters worse they want me to take big narcotic pills and drive on them . I refuse because I don't want to do the same thing to someone else . I think since most of these cars sink up with the cell phones now a days that the car should block texting and internet use while driving .ive seen people surf the web while driving. It's not only the younger people the older "business man/woman" are very guilty also people need to grow up before the government steps in and handles it.

What they should do is get rid of all this b.s. technology in the cars make the cars hard to drive like way back when now power steering no power brakes constantly adjusting your throttle on the steering wheel even make them pump there on fuel to keep the car running then no one will be texting and driving then .(theyed probably just stay home and text)

No. That is wrong. There is no problem with the technology.Personally, I'm glad that now I have multiple airbags, automatic accident avoidance, etc. Where the issue lies is attitude. When you get into a car and drive away, you should concentrate on driving, not eating, not putting on make up, not texting your BFF.... just driving.

Just like in Germany!

I have ATT and they have an app for smart phones called DriveMode that you can turn on, or just leave on, that after your car reaches 15 miles per hour by gps it won't let texts or phone calls through until you come to a stop. It sends a message to the caller that you are driving at the moment and you will return their call later. If you have a hands free Bluetooth device installed it will only stop incoming texts. Works very good.

I use my phone in the '63 for my speedometer using the Speedview app. I was going to make a little holder to put it in the dash and realized I can tuck it between the carpet on the hump and the edge of the passenger a100 seat. Nice, convenient place where I can glance down and see my ACCURATE GPS speed. It also holds top speed, altitude, distance traveled. I guess I managed to hit 128mph one day about a month ago... LOL.

If everyone drove an old car with manual steering and manual valve body they would be too busy to text!
