So at some point I'm gonna need to rebuild the 400ci in my 73 Charger. It's a factory 4barrel and is all original. 42 years old with zero modifications throughout. And that's just how I like it. The car is not the fastest or most intimidating thing in the world, but it's agreed up by myself, my dad and my uncle (the po) that it sounds perfect just how it is. Factory straight up dual exhaust (no x or h pipes), factory cam...you get the idea.

My worry is that when I do get around to rebuilding it, I'll lose that exhaust note. Is there any credibility to that fear? I'd be building it to as close to factory specs as possible, after all.

I suppose it's a silly thing to ask but I'm just curious if it'll change significantly or if I'm just paranoid haha

The only thing I can think that could significantly change your exhaust note would be the cam selection. If you stick with a grind close to factory, it should not really change.

The two biggest effects on how the exhaust sounds is the cam and the mufflers.
The cam changes the rythm and the mufflers increase the db. level.

Both parts are available in stock reproduction.

If you really want to dial it in as factory measure everything as you disassemble the engine. Reverse engineer it basically. Before you pull the cam and #1 piston (pull the other 7 OK) set up a degree wheel. Also CC the heads, piston at TDC and figure the compression.
