The inevitable 'how wide can I go' question

I'll agree that lots of mag wheels back in the day had 3.5-4" backspacing, but that doesn't mean the fit anything... Back then you either did like most people & jacked the car up... Narrowed the rear axle (very few people did this) or found one of the wheel manufacturers who offered different offsets... I had a set of US Mag slots on the rear of my Charger that were 15x10 with 5" of backspacing... Then Centerline came along & started offering custom offsets for more $$$ and other manufacturers saw the light...

I think the manufactures knew what lug patterns were for what types of vehicles and offered what they thought would sell and possibly by requests for certain combinations. I am surprised that some of the really deep dish offsets didn't snap off the lug studs; maybe they did. It wasn't too long ago that absolutely (No One) made aluminum slotted wheels anymore. The set I spoke of earlier that I got on Ebay I was in a bidding war and won the bid in the last 10 seconds. Sad part was, when I got them home I jacked up the car and bolted them on (without mounting any tires) and put the car in gear to see if they rolled straight as they were in very nice condition. It turned out one of them wobbled like hell as it was a little bent. I had to send them back and the guy denied it and said also that I put a gouge in one which was bullshit. That style of wheel to me is not only my favorite but were and are one of the easiest to clean. They also give great access to check drums or calipers dragging. I gave a set of 5 (15x7") to a guy with an old dodge pickup at work. Then another guy at work gave me a set of 5 (17x9") Black MotoMetal wheels. Funny how things like that sometimes work out. It takes longer to clean one of those wheels than doing 4 of any other style. Don't get me wrong, I agree about the factory wheels generally do increase back space as they go wider. Most likely to keep the aspect ratio of the offset standardized so handling and fitment would be close to specs.
There was recently a guy on here that said his friend had N-50 0r 295-50 tires all the way around on a 3rd gen Charger I think. There was a request or two to see that car with meat that wide on the front and I think I was one of them!

Dang, I feel bad for pretty much hi-jacking this thread. :(

It is also the lug pattern on my 2000 Dodge Ram Pickup and believe me I would have gotten a set if I had the money,,,,,,,,,,however,,,,, With the newer huge brakes on vehicles today, like my truck, 15 inch rims generally won't clear the calipers. Thank God they make them in 17" now as well, so, when I possibly rob a bank in the future, I will finally get a set. By the way, I am several other sites as well and on the DodgeRam Forum, I posted a question on the 2 gen truck thread. "Does anyone here have or know of someone who has aluminum slotted mags on their truck?" Guess what, NONE! I think I will start a go-fund page so I can fulfill my dream and be Totally Unique!
I would LOVE slots on my '96 Ram.

I know on 71 to 74 B Body and 70 to 74 E body you can go 17x9 all around. Since that is still a B-body it should fit. The backspacing is 5 1/2 and it gives you an 11 inch tire.
I put 275/40/17 all around.
