For young people, that is a film canister for old fashioned cameras. You would take the film in to a photography shop that sold cameras also. Then you would get actual pictures to put in your photo album. There are still a few of those places left.
At sometime the canister was recycled to store various things. Coins as an example of one use.

Old fashioned cameras?! Oh, that hurts.
BTW, I still have a metal 35mm film canister not one of those cheap, new-fangled plastic canisters. Also, I have several old box cameras and a bellows camera that takes 120 roll film.

Anyway, I went to a digital SLR a couple of years ago. Film still has its uses though.
