Growing up in the 70's and 80's with very young parents, I shared the same radio station preference as them.
Mom and dad's musical preference was and still is my musical preference.
Mom is more "The Who".
I still remember the first time I heard the extended version of "Eminence Front" riding in the back seat.

Dad, if he were still here today, would choose Zeppelin in this thread.
And I'll go with dad on this one.
Zeppelin to me can still fuel the fight at times.
And God knows if we ain't fightin' the fight inside we ain't alive

lying awake at 3 AM it came to me......... and the difference between the two is HUGE! ....... stay with me

it occurred to me that many, if not most of the early Zeppelin songs were crying heart broken over some dumb bimbo that done somebody wrong......you can call it blues it you want, but all I hear is a lot of whining

How Many More Times
Babe I'm Gonna leave You
Your Time is Gonna Come
Dazed and Confused
Ect.......

from my favorite Zeppelin song......

I went to sleep last night, I work as hard as I can-a
I bring home my money, you take my money, give it to another man

I should have quite you, baby
Oh, such a long time ago-ho
I wouldn't be hear with all my troubles
Down on this killin' floor

even calls her a ho

The Who, on the other hand....... is all about partying like Charlie Sheen (lol)

Playing pinball, going mobile, and smashing equipment.........probably laughing at the crybaby Zeppelin guys

Zepp! I don't listen to the lyrics much when it comes to this kind of music. The complexity of the music get's my attention though.

:rofl:Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend

I did go through a period when I couldn't stand LZ, on account of severe radio overplay.

About 1988 to about 1998- a whole decade.

The only song during that period I could stomach was Misty Mountain Hop.

I started to relent a bit after that and as of mid 2000's they're back in my rotation.

Despite being an admitted Who and Roger Daltrey fan, my wife had never seen "Tommy", so I bought that and we watched it about 2003-ish.

She'd also never seen "The Wall". I never noticed before that how similar they start out.

We also went to "The Who Turns 50" concert.

Glad I went.

...but the overpriced jersey I bought fits terrible. Tight and the sleeves are way too long and also too tight.

"Stairway To Heaven" is a good song, but it's highly overrated, while "Squeeze Box" has got to be the Who's worst commercial hit.

Meanwhile I’m listening to Paint it black and minding my own.... lol
I agree RC that is so so true.

Are you kidding?

They got mainstream airplay with a chorus of "in and out and in and out".

Won't get Fooled Again is probably their best. Whole Lotta Love was a Zep favorite while cruising in my Road Runner. I had a couple 12" speakers laying on the front floor and opposite rear seat. There is a lot of cross channel stuff in that. Almost enough to make you nauseous. :fool:

Baba O’Reilly has been played millions of times over the decades, but when it first came out, it was very innovative and different, mainly because of the Moog synthesizer. I was in junior high at the time and I remember my music teacher discussing and analyzing it in one of his classes.

It starts out with the synth and a British flare. Like it was played on a harpsichord back in the 1800's. Thanks for the flashback. I knew the song but never knew the name.

Lots of discussion about the song formerly known as "Teenage Wasteland" to almost everyone.

Some opined that "Baba" was some sort of Indian Shaman.

My reply was always " O'reilly ?"

The Who had a LOT of songs with heavy keyboard parts.

I've never seen a keyboard player on the album credits.

By contrast JPJ of Led Zep played the bass and the keyboards.....sometimes at the same time.

Subjectively or objectively ? Subjectively, I guess it depends on your "zone of experience". My personal zone of experience in music precedes both of them, going back to early 60's the Beach Boys, Four Seasons, et al. So, subjectively I like The Who a teensy-weensy itsy-bitsy bit better. A margin so slim, you'd need your best micrometer to measure. Objectively, Led Zeppelin far surpasses The Who in sales popularity.
