I have been looking for a new rear-end for a while now. Finally found a carrier that would work.

In my charger i have a 8 1/4 open rear with a tall gear. 27 spline.

I've spoken to a few mechanics they said this "theoretically" should work. I had a FBBO member send me a carrier a while back but it ended up being 29 spline.

I've read up on the process of switching the carriers and gears out, i know it will be difficult. I'm just putting this out here to see if it's the right choice?

I learn something new every day. I didn't know the 8 1/4 rear came in any passenger vehicles, just thought it was a truck axle. You just looking for a sure grip? Not sure if its an option but have you priced out a complete axle 8 1/4 or 8 3/4? might save you the headache of install and buying tools, gaskets, bearings, etc

I've looked up 8 3/4 and being not near any junk yards or anyone selling one, shipping costs are insane. I've been looking for an axle for about two years now? It wasn't until earlier this year that someone gave me the thought of just switching out the carrier and the gear? I have most of the tools, dad was a mechanic back in the day, only missing a lift but I think I can do without.

Also another problem I'm faced with is if I buy a complete rear-end Id have to deal with relocating the leaf springs? Mine were re-welded farther in to compensate for the fatter tire in the back.

It might have been a "back in the day" swap, like putting a small block V8 in a slant car.

Do yourself a favor and keep looking. I think if you plan on doing any major horsepower improvements, you will need a beefier rear. 8 3/4 is a start. Anything over 350 hp and you are pushing the limits of the 8 1/4 rear

Look on Craigslist. I'm located in the upstate of SC and have seen a few rearends listed on there, 8 1/4 and 8 3/4. Also, check in the Asheville and Charlotte NC listings as well. If you're not in a hurry just keep looking one will eventually show-up.

Yeah man, I see you have your 1/4 mile time in your signature, so if u plan on racing, dump that 8-1/4 and find an 8-3/4.

Here's one in Gastonia NC. $175. Sounds like a road trip.
