Has anyone updated this dinosaur? Seems like a waste of $30 for a new one. A simple 555 timer circuit would be way more reliable.

I know this topic has been posted by others in the past just curious if there has been any updates.

Note: Not holding my breath….

there is a brand called Crown which uses to get them on $10 rate. Can’t recall the PN from that brand.

They do get quite hot. I don't like leaving the doors open for extended periods.
If I do I pull the timer out of the connector or disconnect the battery.

i use to do the same. The timer is easy to reach down the dash so I pull it out if keeping the door open for long time…

What a PITA it’s a simple RC circuit but without much heat sinking lol. Mopar another stupid design. This was a problem day one.
 
555 based timers are pretty easy to build from scratch, I build electric choke controls using 555 timer chips. Used for the ignition lamp function, wouldn’t be any heat to be concerned with.

Heating/cooling bi-metal strips was the technology of the time for basic timing, it doesn’t get that hot, never seen any problems or damage as a result of leaving the door open for an extended time.

Interesting. The. Its not a discrete RC tank circuit but a bi-metalic strip. That does imply it works solely by heat expansion and cooling contraction. Maybe so many cycles it gets resistive and when left on it gets too hot for some. You maybe just have one thats young at heart?
 
Simple bi-metal normally open contact switch, heating wire wrapped around the bi-metal strip. Grounding the door switch input heats the strip to close the contacts, lamp on. Closing the door removes the supplied heat, cools off in a minute or two to open the contacts, lamp out. Again, have seen hundreds of them over the years, they don’t get hot enough to cause any real damage to anything. They were originally taped to the dash harness. I suppose repeated prolonged open doors could shorten the life of the internal heating element over time, just don’t recall these as being a problem back in the day. Have several original delay relays kicking around here, and in cars, all still working as originally designed.

Yeap, but with prices now.. better try to get last long more.

5 or 6 years ago I was able to find them on US$6 ( crown ) while is true some original Mopar ones were already on $20 rate. Some crazy guys tried to sell NOS on $40-50 rate. I think Mopar dealers used to get it on $30.

stock is also being reduced.

I use to remove it when working on the car, like maybe fixing anything down the dash. Not just on a regular use.
