Time to buy a cam for my 65 Coronet, stock 69 383, 4:10 suregrip, 2700 stall 727, Weiand tunnel ram with twin Holley 660's, Hedman headers, car weighs 3300 lbs. Mostly street use. Need cam/lifter kit recommendations.

I know the plans you have for the car. I had this one in a "B" engine.Comp Cams #CRB 286H-8.It is very similar to the "Thumper brand" Comp has now. .490 I/E lift,Duration @.050 236*,lobe separation 108*. Lifters #A-CRS-CRB-HYD. Sound great and very streetable.I ran a 3500 converter. My 2 cents..

The above cam sound like a sewing machine on steroids! But it's a bitchin' cam!

XE285HL Comp hydraulic works good. Use #924-16 springs and adjustable rockers/pushrods.

Was this cam used with stock pistons? When I re-built my '71 383, I used the forged flat top pistons (no valve reliefs) that sit almost at zero deck height, and I think the heads were also milled 0.040" (but using the thicker fel-pro head gaskets), and the piston to valve clearance was getting a bit close with a 228/236 @ 0.050 Crower Compu-Pro cam. The XE285HL is way larger 241/247 @ 0.050", so curious if the pistons had valve reliefs for clearance?

I would suggest clay-checking for clearance, but if a .509 PurpleShaft will fit (a popular choice, albeit overkill) the XE285HL should fit. I have seen VP interference with the .509" in '69 (positive deck pistons with no valve reliefs) HP 383's, so your results may vary!!
