AG has some good points about the mech advance, so in addition make sure your springs aren't broken or too loose. Very loose springs may cause erratic timing readings, which you would have seen early on. No matter what if you apply vacuum to the vac advance unit it will advance the timing. What side is your vac advance can on looking from the top of the dizzy and the can facing you? I have seen a small block distributor housing with a big block shaft.
