Timing gear question

Why would the crank not care where the cam is? They are both relative to timing.
Understand what your saying. Yeah, once the chain is in place, true. Though, I was just saying the balancer mounted on the crank, is set, as far as the timing mark. I'll leave it there...no big deal. Cam can be timed anywhere.
Guess I was clear as mud.

Installing the timing chain and gears is one thing. Make sure it's correct with the key in the crank.

The installation of the dampner is what it is, no mistakes can be made. It only goes on one way.

Some of the aftermarket dampners are off. They must have taken the timing mark location off of a certain year vehicle that isn't the same as other years and you get what you get. You will have to modify your timing tab on the cover to compensate.

Use a piston stop

This is a Professional Products dampner that I had and the mark was off 10*. I didn't like what I heard about these dampners so I replaced it with one from 440 Source. It's off 10*. I had to remarked my timing tab. It had nothing to do with installing my timing chain.

With all those high-dollar, shiny balancers, one would think the timing mark would be right. No wonder I stick with stock.

The 440 Source one was $100. They didn't have the flat black one. They do now. Closest thing to a stock one out there for the money. There are other ones out there that are wider and will throw your pully off to where it was from the factory. Then you have to deal with that. I'm happy with the 440 Source one, just wish they would have had the black one.

I`ve got a 440 source fluid damper on my 505" wedge. When I bought it they were out of the black ones, but I needed it. The chrome doesn't show the timing light well to me, I knew that, when I bought it. I did put timing tape on it to help the light thing. The balancer was spot on w/ top dead center. Back when I raced a hemi and wanted more degree marks on the stock balancer, I painted the balancer, and put timing tape on it before it was dry, it was on it 14 yrs later when I sold it.
