Installing a gear set into 440 when #1 is at tdc compression stroke should dots be cam at 6 crank at 12

Yes. Don't trust your eyes though. Use a straight edge from the center of the crank snout through the center of the cam bolt to make sure the dots are aligned.

thanks for the quick response, if the marks were set cam 12 and crank 12 would engine still run

Yes. The crank rotates twice for every one revolution of the cam ... I've never done it that way though. I like my dots close together!

!!!NO!!! This is a trick which is not documented. When the dots are "dot to dot" IE cam dot "down" and crank dot "up" it is no6 ready to fire and not no1

There is no reason to "sweat" this, all that happens is, you either put the dist. in for no6 or else rotate the crank 1 turn after you get things together and THEN put the dist in at no1

As above yes. The factory shop manuals show "dot to dot" which is no 6. The crank turns once, then the cam is at 12 o'clock, and no 1 fires.

I agree!!! much, much easier to foretell alignment at "6 and 12". PLEASE CONSIDER degreeing the cam whil it is apart.

found an old mopar shop manual says if dot to dot make sure #6 is at tdc
