I don't know if thius is a common thing for these 3rd gen Chargers, but every time I close the trunk of my 73, it has a weird "tinny" sound. That's the only way I can think to describe it. It doesn't have a solid "thud" or "clunk". Is this common? What may be the issue and what can be done to resolve it? Not a big deal of course, just seein if my car is the weird one!

Of the outer sheet metal is no longer attached to the frame work on the bottom of the decklid, it can make that noise.

There is a structure or frame under the skin of the truck lid. That frame was factory bonded to the outer skin with some sort of adhesive. If someone or thing has disturbed that bonding the trunk lid will make unusual noises when closing.

Oh I see. So this is a problem where I'd have to disassemble the trunk lid itself to fix?

You should be able to run a bead of adhesive along the underside of the trunk lid along the braces. Or just insulate the underside in-between the braces. Almost all of these cars did this. As the adhesive dries out and gets old it comes loose. I have 3 trunks on one 72 and 2 73's they all sound just like yours.

A good heavy bead of silicone between the trunk skin and the braces would also work and you will not have to worry about it drying out. Just do not sit anything on the trunk lid until the silicone cures.

Have been researching sound deadener/ heat insulation and ran across this thread http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/alternative-lizard-skin-103610.html

Basically ceramic micro balloons mixed into paint that provides a heat barrier and deadens sound a little.

One post describes taking off trunk lid, taping holes off and pouring paint/sphere mixture inside and rotating to spread paint inside. They said it shuts with a more solid thunk.

Of course any modification like this might cause someone to question your sanity later, but it is your own car.

You may have a hard time getting the caulk type material in between the inner and outer layers of the trunk lid. These areas are not easily accessible without being able to get to the inner and outer layers of the trunk. The stuff mentioned above may be your best bet. The trunk lid isn't made like the hood is. I attached a picture of my 71 RR trunk lid to show you what I'm talking about.

Mine does that too - I'm not really disturbed by it other than when popping loud music the lid bounces around a bit...

In this picture you can see how the caulking is in between the inner and outer layers of metal. This is an example of a Plymouth duster hood. The 71 -74 B Body hoods are very similar.

I can remember them from back in the day and they always sounded "Tinny" to me even when almost new. I don't know if you will be able to get away from that.

Atm I'm trying to fill the holes with dampening material and if it works out fine, I'll construct some kind of cover so you don't have to see it. I'll post results later when I'm done.

This is a normal thing on all mopars. All of mine do the same thing. Sound deadener, like dynamat would probably do the trick, but I personally don't want to look at it. if it could be hidden inside the structure of the lid....... but how do you get it in there.

I've owned different Mopars for 35 years and they all have this sound . It's like a trademark and I love it .

Well my 70 Dart closes nice and solid with a hard thunk. And that car had a rough life before I got it. The charger was always garaged, minus a year or so. Always had the weak close as far as I can remember. I'm not terribly concerned, just prefer it to be solid, always feel like I'm gonna break something when I close it! Haha
