Some of the wheel options I am looking at for 62 Polara have either 4.25 or 4.75 backspacing available for my size. 15x8 (275/60/15) on rear.

If 4.5 backspacing is not available will 4.25 be too close? I would prefer not to have them customize backspacing nor use a spacer. Never used 4.75....is that too far out?

Thanks.

I would say 4.25 would be too close. I had a 275/60/15 on a stock 80's 15x7 steel rim on my 63 Plymouth wagon. There was less than 1/2" of space between the leaf springs. Might be a liitle different if the rim was 8". Im swapping the rear for a 65 rear which I think is 1" wider

Ok. I realize this is not the exact combination you are running but it should give you a point of reference:
1964 Polara
15"x10" rims 4 1/4" back space
285/70R-15 tires
outside of Spring to outside of spring @ rear end 39"
wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface (drum brakes) 56"
distance from inside of tire to spring 3 1/2"

I have Wheel Vintiques 63 Series steel rims, 15x8, on my 1962 Belvedere in yhe back. Backspacing is 4 1/2". I believe I have 255/65R15s on them. The tires were pretty close to the springs. They could have gone out towards the wheel opening a bit.

Backspace is distance from hub mounting surface to inner rim lip. If anything, I think a 4.25" would be better at least on my B body.

My mistake. I should have said 4.75 would be too close. 4.25 might be pretty good
