No, it's not my birthday. No, I didn't just become a grandfather. No, today I was cruising into work and while I was driving on I-295 what do I see but an F-body Mustang GT wearing a Florida Antique license plate!!! Yep... the "new" cars I used to race against in my "old" car are now classified as antiques.

Lord, I feel old. :(

Well, 79 was the first year for the 'F Bomb' and that's considered old now lol

Yep, when I was growing up an antique car was from the 1920s or 1930s, and I can deal with seeing cars that were new when I was a kid being antiques, but seeing one that came out when I was an adult considered an antique... wow!

I get that. It didn't come out when I was an adult, but the first NEW truck I got was an '88 Chevy, then an '89 Chevy. Under Texas' standards, both of these trucks are "classics" and qualify for special license plates, no emissions testing, etc.

It was a shocker to me when I realized that. It does make you feel a little older.

What's worse (for me) is reading some of the horror stories about folks taking "classic" cars to have basic maintenance (oil change/tune-ups) and nobody knows how to deal with a carburetor or a coil-ignition...I remember taking those trucks in for routine service (back before I started doing my own work) and nobody knew how to deal with these "new fangled" electronic ignition systems and throttle-body injection systems.

Man how times have changed...

I was rebuilding a Quadrajet for a friend the other day and he was telling me the same thing...
He said their were only two other shops in town that would even look at his old truck and both told him he needed to buy a new one rather than rebuild it. I wont even talk about what they wanted for money.

I hope a Lot more guys get fancy old cars that no one knows how to fix any more I need the money.
Unfortunately it wont happen tho because most people are building RETRO RODS with all new crap that doesn't work any way so who cares.

I think about those guys wanting to stick new Hemis into old cars everytime I see a new Charger or Challenger sitting alongside the highway or getting towed or sitting at the shop. :) With old tech all you need is spark, gas, and air, and if the engine won't start you're missing one of them. With the newer ones, it could be a multitude of problems and who needs that?

So far my 95 Dakota has needed a new computer and a few sensors but for a 19 year old vehicle, I can't complain about it...and with the ethanol gas, seems the carbs always needed attention especially if they weren't being driven very much.

I'm right with you there Bruzilla. A model T is an antique, or some rig you have to steer with a tiller, but not cars from the 70s and 80s. A car that came with a CD player is NOT an antique.

there called relic`s now ,do you feel any better I remember the cars of the 30`s 40`s and into the 50`s where big when I was a kid and then later the 60`s and 70`s after that there wasn't any true hots unless you re built or modified them your self look back at the up it wasn't until later that they started to make some thing that was nice

If your old ?? what does that make all of us that are even older than you are ??... I guess were/I'm ancient then !!... what is the criteria for the antique plates, 20 years old ?? that's not antique, that's just broken in... I pretty much hate most Mustangs from 1971 -2002 anyway, unless they are a racecar & I probably wouldn't even have noticed anyway...He He Ha Ha

Beer supply IS a priority!

REMEMBER: 'Beer has food value but food has no beer value"

yep a classic or muscle car, makes "me feel better" about our older car, most anything with "plastic bumpers" isn't a classic, there are a few exceptions thou...
Brass era cars are antiques !!

Yup.......getting "aged".

I'm with ya Bru!! Still hard for me to see "Antique" on my license plate!

Yep, the "new" car dies on you, just give up and call the tow truck.
Makes you feel not only old, but vunerable to drive it.
Think I'll stick with my reliable one.

Sucks don't it, It was a long time before i got used to the idea my sons 82 Camaro was officially an antique, Even at the point i told my wife that one more person tells me or says something like "way back in the 70's" Im no longer responsible for my actions! lol
