looking to buy a 2800 converter, on a budget,is there any 1 to stay away.thanks all.
 
There are lots of favorites out there. I have to say I used a well known favorite maker and had a sub-par experience. They steered me into something way over the top that didn't work at all. I've since had 2 completely awesome experiences with the folks over at PTC in Alabama. Those guys know what they're doing and are super nice. I would call them first.

The problem some places have is estimating the stall speed based on the info you provide about your car and driving goals. PTC nailed it both times. I even mailed one back to them to adjust up just 200 RPM and when they sent it back it was spot on. For 2800 stall, stick with a larger converter about 11". If whoever you call tries to steer you towards a 9" with the same stall speed (like another place did to me), I predict nothing but trouble. That's a generalization I know, but that was my experience in seeking a 2600 stall speed for my 68 B body.

ddpsnake, what sort of combination do you have? In my bracket race cars I've run B&M (mid'70's, not the same company now), Turbo Action (several 8 3/4" versions, drag racing is hard on converters)), Coan 8 3/4" all behind a 440 550-600 HP. My current street/strip Satellite has had a 10" Turbo Action, Tight version and currently 9 1/2" Lupo Dynamic. Both of these work great behind my 500" & 512" motors. Dynamic, Turbo Action, maybe Coan & PTC should be good considerations. If you give them good information, they can get you a good product. I wouldn't pick a stall speed out of thin air. Let a professional pick it based on your combination and how you'd use the car.
 
well hear goes. 360 30 over 9 two 1 comp, headers,edelbrock rpm performer,650 dp,262 comp cam,stock 188 valve heads,904 tranny, going with 355 gear, now that cam is small going to break it in with it and in a later time going with something bigger,but not to big i have power brakes.the 71 is street driven,but would like to take it to our local strip once or twice .maybe 350 hp.
 
Dynamic is who I had the bad experience with. Don’t use 9” for a street car with that low of a stall. Maybe a higher stall they would be fine? in the end after some argument back and forth the rep’s manager made it right and gave me a refund but it was headache and a waste of time.

that 262 is about where you want to be with 3.55 and 9:1 (taller gears or heavier car 256)
you can get a 262-265 with a much fatter lift curve
post back your cranking compression
go much bigger it's going to get soft (er) on the bottom end if that matters
268 comp is going to like 9.7 and a converter (not recommending comp)
one thing if thinking of a larger cam is to retard the one you have 4 degrees- see how you like it, run another compression test
compare the timings- you can get the 262 and 268 timing diagrams on comp's website
compare the intake close ABDC between 256-262-268
 
wy the 360 is on a engine stand, just garbing parts for this winter engine swap, thanks for the advice.

dd, since I'm a BB guy, my experience with SB's is limited to my tow vehicles. But I'm sure getting the best converter for a SB is more difficult than a BB. Talk to the converter manufactures listed and give them the specifics of your combination, see what they come up with. Cam design, CR, realistic RPM expectations, gear/tire, all these are most important with a SB converter selection.
