With my project '71 Charger, I also got a Torqueflite A-727 Transmission. It looks to be in good condition on the outside, and still has fluid in it (that looks good too). It, and the motor (and a lot of other things) are not in the car.

Should I buy a book such as "Torqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook" (Summit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hpb-hp1399) and rebuild/inspect it myself, or take it into a transmission shop, or what to make sure it will work before I install it in the car?

Thanks!!!

Hi!
I'm dealing with this right now...
Case in point: Recently acquired 67 GTX
I am rebuilding the engine that was recently re-built...AND..
Rebuilding the Trans (727)

Simply put, I believe it would be foolish to "NOT" do it.
Too much "in doubt"
On one hand, you may get years of service from the trans in its existing state.
On the other hand, you may assemble the car, get it running and it may fail in a month or two.

My "Luck" is always the second option, failure at the inoppourtune time.
So I am choining to do it all at once.
My quote: $650
(I recently had a 727 Race/Street done for $1,000)

I rebuilt my small and big block 727s by using a dvd and clutch pack tool from Boxwrench.net. step by step guidance with the DVD.

Thanks! Is the video instruction any better than the ones (all 18-20) of them from these guys?Rebuilding 727 torqueflite 600hp part1: http://youtu.be/xzJhCBZ1wMY

Yup, Watched them all ( a few times ) and then did the HD 727 for my 68 383 GTS. First one I ever did. Pretty straight forward if you take your time.

I didn't even used to own a clutch tool. Two 13/16" sockets squeezing the pressure plate in a vise along with a C- clamp for a thee point compressor. The hardest part of the entire deal is getting the high gear clutch piston to drop down in the drum. The rest is cake. I've probably built 100 or more.

Sadly, DVD is not in stock. Don't know why, I could burn a copy myself.

Should I buy a book such as "Torqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook"

That would be your best bet. No video will show you the ins and outs of the parts differences, or choices on any mods you want to toss in, or all the clearances.

Building it yourself...you'll know what you have.

The 67 model I built for my 64...total cost around $400...that includes the $100 initial cost of the trans, complete OHC kit, and the modifications I made on it.
