Anyone shed any light on this. My transmission will always pull away in 2nd it never picks up 1st. You can manually select 1st 2nd and 3rd which are all fine but from drive it's always 2nd and 3rd only. Kicks down from 3rd to 2nd but not from 2nd to 1st.
I have the car in the transmission shop today so I guess I'll find out later what the prob is. I'm hoping it's either a seized governor or a stuck valve. Has anyone had this issue with there 727. I have my *** cheeks clenched nice and tight at the moment until I hear the verdict on how many $$$$$$$$ or in my case £££££££ this is gonna hurt me for.

Yep. Reverse works fine. It all works, shifts and drive smooth and sweet it just don't pick up 1st from drive.
well I've just had the report back from the transmission guy and it's not good news. There is an aftermarket valve body in there plus a **** load of fragments sitting in the pan. It's strange because you'd never tell there was anything up with it, just this prob with no 1st.
So not sure what I'm gonna do yet. Use as is for now or just bite the bullet and have it rebuilt.

How big are the fragments? Fine particles is normal when the trans has some age but fragments mean trouble.

Possibly 1st/reverse band not adjusted properly &/or 2nd gear band not adjusted correctly &/or too tight... just spit balling

particles in the pan can mean allot of different things, is it just metallic looking dust in the fluid ??, or is it noticeable pieces ?? obviously the latter is the worse.... Just because it has an aftermarket valve body, doesn't mean the valve body is the problem, if the car is "automatic" shifted & the throttle pressure valve/kick down linkage was not on the car or on the car & not adjusted correctly, for any extended period of time, that could have caused allot of the problems... Unless it's a manual valve body, the TPV/Kick Down Linkage needs to be on & adjusted properly... Good Luck with the 727 TF

When in "D", the transmission is supposed to start out in first gear by use of the rear clutch pack only. Selecting "1" also engages the rear band which holds the rear planet carrier that would otherwise be freewheeling while decelerating because of the one way clutch. It may be that those particles that you're finding in the pan are parts of the one way sprag clutch no longer doing its job, forcing you to select "1" to manually lock the planet carrier.

This has happened to me in the past.

Really, I'm not a tranny expert, just playing one on the internet...LOL... Good point Photon440, IMHFO if you use an aftermarket valve body, that doesn't use rear band apply {I prefer rear band apply style valve bodies, especially for use on the street}, it could help to save your overrunning clutch/spag from detonating/exploding {a bolt in or pinned style overrunning clutch/spag is better also}, you usually need to be completely stopped also for it to go back into 1st gear, if you don't have a valve body with rear band apply, it's kind of a safety feature... There is a great book, with allot of mods & great information on how to's with the near bullet proof A-727 Torqueflite transmission you could get... "Torqueflite A-727 Handbook", author Carl Monroe, by HPBooks-1399

I've located another box today from a buddy of mine so have spent the evening dropping the old box out (f**ing not fun. Beers helped)
have posted some pics of the frags in the pan and it is a fine dust. I just don't know enough about auto boxes to confirm if it's shagged or not, unfortunately on this subject I'm guided by others. Like I said previously the box drove fine, had reverse and never gave any indication as to being f**cked. Well I'll find out tomorrow when I fit the new box as to whether it was a worthwhile fix or if I've just wasted my time, money and skin on my knuckles.
Thank you all for your helpful replies. I'll keep you posted on how it's gone.

that valve body is factory it just has a kit from transgo in it. ive had a couple of these kits and it works good but it looks like the fluid is burnt,, id rebuild it

UPDATE. I decided to use the box I got from my buddy. Did the front/rear seals on it this morning, put in a new filter, added a higher stall converter that he gave me with it. We now have 1st 2nd and top. Car changes through the gears lovely. So guess alls well that ends well. It's 10:45pm now and I'm still down the garage admiring a job well done. Thanks for all your replies.
