Hey all I have a '65 Belvedere Poly 318/TorqueFlite and I was told the trans was rebuild with 1500 on it (I have no documentation on that). Trans runs great through the gears but shifts very fast. It'll go 1-2-3 by the time I hit like 10mph. Also the kick down doesn't seem to ever activate and I'll have to manually drop it into 2nd. It downshifts when I come to a stop so nothin funny there. Has anyone else experienced this? Let me know, thank you

The kickdown arm sounds like it needs to be properly adjusted. Is the arm moving simultaneously with throttle opening?

Is the carburetor factory or aftermarket? Aftermarket carbs need a throttle lever adapter.

Do you have a photo of the kickdown at the carb? That's where I usually start. Running a Torqueflite with the kickdown mis adjusted can ruin the transmission.

Original kickdown is a one piece rod with adjustment at carburater end. Push carb linkage to fully wide open. Adjust kickdown rod so trans lever is all the way back. If this does not get you close, there could be something wacky with the valve body.

The TF k/down set up was NOT one of Chrys best ideas....
You are dealing with ratios...
The ratio of throttle arm movement, relative to the movement of the k/down lever on the trans. Anything from the carb to the trans can change/upset this ratio. Eg: you fit a carb with larger pri throttle bores. Throttle blades [ & linkage ] do not need to move as far to attain the same road speed & trans shifts early....

If at wide open throttle it holds the lower gears (Kickdown adjusted correctly), but upshifts through the gears quick at light throttle, the stop for the kickdown on the valve body is adjusted too far out, or there is a valve body problem.

I'd argue that the design worked fine if left alone. Once you change things around, it gets problematic.
Just like how we bitch about header fitment....with manifolds, it all fits together fine.
I'll admit that the engineers didn't show any consideration for ease of modifying the cars. Look at a big block car for example....Oil filter, starter, ATF lines, KD linkage, shifter linkage ALL on the left side when they could have at least ran the ATF likes and KD on the right side just as easily. The left side of our cars is way overcrowded with that stuff.

Sorry for the delay... Aftermarket Carter 4bbl with what looks like a factory KD

Check to make sure the throttle pressure arm on the trans is reaching full travel at the same time the carb is at full throttle.

Nut and bolt through linkage end slot should not be there.
Linkage needs adjusted , down load the FSM like suggested . Need to go through the whole linkage set from trans to carb pin. Once set up that slotted linkage end should be closer to the thottle pin.
But check the whole set and yes you do need a rearward return or hold back spring on the linkage.
