I have a 70 RR 727 auto. The trans has a recent rebuild on it. After a couple of day cold start i get a whine when i put it in reverse. it sounds like a power steering whine. but it is definetly from the trans only when in reverse. What is causing it ??? Fluid level is good. Also after sitting for a few days without running, the trans needs to build up pressure to go into gear.

What kind of valve body is in it ? The delay of the trans in gear after sitting is normal. Ron

what was done on the rebuild?
I have seen people block the vent on the pump which will cause a whine
if they did block it ( pretty common practice) did they install a vent on the tail?

Whatever the cause it's pump related I would go back to the shop and have them run through it again incase they missed something

He did a std rebuild. The whine didn't start till a few months after the rebuild.

did he flush the cooler?
was a new converter installed?
pump is pretty simple and straight forward
only whines in reverse?

I don't know about the cooler & converter. But it only whines in reverse when cold.

Do you drive the car every day and if so, does it whines every time you put it in reverse or only after it sits for a few days?

Most of the time I had a trans whine it was either a clogged filter or clogged cooler as they were the most common. Some year valve bodies had an aluminum spool valve that would also buzz at times and we would replace it with a steel spool valve. But if this started a few months after the rebuild it has me wondering ?? Did they replace the converter and is it a lock-up converter ? My friend had a rebuild and the shop did not replace the lock-up converter which the clutch was going away in the converter and it got enough material in the pan it clogged the trans filter in about 2 months as I was thinking to myself when I took the pan down for him that it makes no sense as I though they had replaced the converter. When it sits a few days many times the converter drains back into the pan and thats why its delayed going in gear right away. Many of them do it and there is a few things you can do to stop it but as long as it works fine in a minute or so it should be fine as tons of them out there do that. But when you start the car start it in Neutral and not park as the pump does not fill the converter in park in that trans so if you start it in Neutral and wait about 15 seconds it should go right in gear. After 2 months something let go... I would pull the trans pan and if I didn't see anything in there like a check ball, spring, bolt or nightmarish situation I would pull the trans out and start the rebuilding.... if you just had it done at a shop drop it off there and see what they say... don't drive the car that will not cause more problems... got a warranty from the place?

Say I just put $2000 in a tranny got it all in and it won't work right.... it may not be another $2000 dollars to fix it... it could be almost nothing only the person who did the work knows if they remember..... and the shop may or may not stand behind their work... start another thread about " just got my tranny back from the shop for the second time in 2 months *****

It's a fair weather car. I only drive it to local cruises or an occasional jaunt open it up. I think it only whines after a cold start up.
