I need recommendations on which transmission blanket to buy in regards to price and fitment.
Any suggestions ?
Let us all know.
Thanks

No experience here but I am thinking of running one of these. Wonder what are pros and cons of blankets vs shield. May try to make my own shield if that's legal.

Home-made isn't legal. It needs to be an SFI certified part. Shields are better fitting and less hassle than the blankets that have straps hanging down that just burn on headers. Some shields fit the floors better than others so do your homework. I'll be ditching my 727 in the future and just going with a TH400 using a Reid SFI case.

The biggest problem with the blanket shield is heat retention. The metal shield allows for some airflow.

I don't need a blanket, my tranny runs warm enough without it!

For years I had a blanket,,,,,,,,,rolled up the passenger well for ballast. When tech asked me if I had a blanket in the car the answer was yes. They didn't ask if it was wrapped around the trans.
When I started getting nervous about the explosions That were being posted,I bought a CSI shield along with a billet drum and several other trans internals that I broke and upgraded along the way.
So I think the carbon fiber shield is the way to go. Even if you use a blanket, you still need to cover the bellhousing.

And a few other small items:blob1:

That shield really looks terrific...but...

bobtile...I guess you would have to pull the motor/trans (as a unit) out of the car...install this on the shop floor and then put the motor/trans/shield (as a unit) back into the car ?

I dont see how someone could slip it up around the tranny and install it with the trans in the car ....

I really dont want to pull the motor/trans out of the car at this time of the season so I think I will go with a blanket for this season.

Another question:
For cars running slower than 10.50 seconds....will a SFI FLEXPLATE and a transmission blanket pass tech inspection ?

As far as a blanket goes...I searched and found the A&A (trans) blanket is made especially for Torqueflites and is $159 for a 2" pan and $169 for a 4" pan.
I guess if I were to buy a blanket I would get the A&A at least because they say it is MADE FOR A TORQUEFLITE.

I did talk personally with Chuck Lofgren (Lofgren Trans) yesterday. He said he was going to get the word from the person who assembles his blankets to see if he was going to make another production run. If he does he said it would be April. I had a lot of good feedback on his blankets thru various Mopar Internet Sites. He said his were, I think, about $150-160.

Caution, you may have fitment issues.

Mike,
I ran the Lofgren piece in my Belvedere. It was a small square pad that could fit without touching the stock floor. My was SFI but later ones that he sold weren't and eventually went away. Glad to hear he might be coming back with them.
My Coronet has a TCI aluminum 2 Piece shield which required floor mods and is cumbersome.

I'll let you know how the CSR shield fits in a B Body. I have one for my 71 Charger. I know the seam between the floor pan and firewall has to be removed for it to clear.
There is enough flex in the Alterkation mounts to let the back of the engine hang down a bit to get Trans bolts in.
I'll see how it goes.

Mike I hade a CSI shield on my Cuda(73) other than rolling the floor / firewall lip it fit fine. I simply sat the shield on the trans lifted it up w/ a floor jack and bolted all to the engine.
Now on our 67 's I dont see the shield fitting(w/o major cutting)The trans tunnel is much smaller..

Chuck says, if he makes another production run, that the NON SFI is $100 and the SFI APPROVED IS about , $180

I have a blanket on mine and I bought it used. Been on the car about 5 years and I actually dont remember what brand it is. It wraps around the trans and covers about all of it other then the end of the bellhousing. I installed it with the eng and trans in the car but I did remove the trans crossmember and lowered the rear of the trans a little so I could fit it in there. It was a little bit of work but I got it in like that. I also plan to go with a shield one day when I get around to it. If I get a chance I will go out in the garage and look under the car and see if I can see what brand it is. Ron

I run blankets on my cars. D&J. They are local to me and I can run them over there for recertification. Every 2 years. Same for belts. I use as much as I can from them, driving suit, boots, blower restraint, blankets and belts all need recerts. And diapers and other things I'am forgeting about.

Mike I run the CSR shield and strap, same one bobtile posted a picture of. No way to get to top trans bolts after motor and trans are installed. Fit is good!

I use the CSR shield on my cuda and really like it. You do have to drop the trans to install it though. I had a 727 explode several years ago...not pretty. REALLY glad I had the shield in there.
I have a Lofgren blanket on the road runner. Fits nice, but they don't make them anymore.

The TCI shield like was posted earlier will not fit a stock body car w/o a lot of surgery. If you don't want to cut up the car, the CSR shield or a blanket is the way to go. I've heard horror stories about the big and bulky universal blankets though. That's why the Lofgren blankets were so popular...they are a lot smaller.

If a grenade was going to explode about a foot away from my legs I want a big and bulky blanket around it.

Ron,
I talked with the TECH guy today at A&A Transmission. They make blankets especially for Torqueflites.
He did confirm that for the install you pretty much have to remove the transmission crossmember to get the blanket up into place. Also with the trans crossmember out to lower the rear of the motor to be able to get the steel rings on the blanket straps to fit under the bellhousing bolts.
It is NOT a simple install like I was hoping for.Mike
