I installed a new TCI valve body into my 65 plymouth with a 67 or newer 727 with factory console shifter. I adjusted the cable to make sure all gears were engaged several times without the engine running due to having to dropping the header for access to the linkage. I checked to make sure it would crank in park and neutral. but after , i put everything back, added the transmission fluid, antifreeze and started the car, and moved the shifter to neutral to check the transmission fluid level it would not go back into park. Could I have done something wrong when i installed the parking rod(paw)?

Something isn't indexing correctly.... start over and give it another go.
The rod has a bearing on the end that fits the cup and its blind to get it in there so it will appear to go in but it's not engaging ... spin the drive shaft and play with the rod (hehe) till it goes it park and catches.....

Sounds like it may be linkage adjustment, If it went into park once before. Try disconnecting the shift cable from the trans lever, and see if you can put it into park by moving the shift lever by hand. If you can, then it must be the linkage at fault. Once the rod goes into the transmission, and engages the park detent, I don't think there is alot that can go wrong other than linkage adjustment.

When you pull the valve body the parking rod is hard to line back up because you can't see where it goes into and can float around and not engage...

Definitely not the linkage since it would not go into park without the linkage. I will try to align the rod better and turn the drive shaft as suggested. thanks.
