Hello all,

Just wrapping up my build on a 68 road runner.
My build includes a tremec TKX to replace my 833 manual. I purchased this from American Powertrain as a package.

Have any of you thay have done this experienced a problem with the shift lever making contact with the bench seat. Here's images of my issue and this is with the seat fully back.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Where did that handle come from? Take a torch to that one and bend it where and want it to look like. Painted mine black, but you can have it rechromed.

What shifter position is that? There are 3? offered I believe.
This is my TKO position, but I have bucket seats.

If it were mine I would shift it into 1st/3rd & 5th to see which is closest to the dash... Then I would unbolt the handle from the car, put it in a vise clamping the area where the bolts are... I would set up a fixed reference so I would know how far I can bend the lever.... Use a torch to heat it & bend it keeping the heat below the point where the boot will hide it... Might even use a damp rag to keep excess heat from damaging the chrome above the boot...

This handle came from American Powertrain and was purchased as a complete kit. I hate having to modify something that was supposed to be a direct fit. The image shown shows reverse but 2nd and 4th gear also make contact.

Has anyone else come across this?

Thanks for all the responses so far...

I believe that plate towards the rear with 6 bolts allows two other shifter locations.
I also have a TKX, but no pics. Not sure if you want to make the changes in sheet metal /crossmember to improve shifter location and shorten the throw.
I don't believe it is a big deal to move the location on the trans.

Negative, the plate with the 6 bolts are simply a cover. There's nothing mechanical underneath it. I looked at it prior to installation. it was an alternate shift location, that would put the shifter even closer to the bench seat as well.
I appreciate your response and all others weighing in...Many thanks

Did you call them to discuss this issue? Its possible you were sent the wrong shift handle. If I had paid them the big bucks that's the first place I would be calling.

Yip, definitely contacted them. Person who has been helping me with purchase and helping me along the way said it looks like something is wrong with the shift lever. He
referred it to their product support staff and so far, no resolution.

Guess that I missed that it came with the trans. Yes, call them. That lever/handle looks exactly like a bayonet console one. They machined it to fit the TKX. Or an overdrive bayonet lever/handle. My Dart had an bayonet overdrive lever/handle modified the same way to fit a Hurst Competition Plus. So I took my torch to it and made it look like the stock bayonet bench seat lever/handle. Then painted it black. Those lever/handles go for around $175. So these pictures, the chrome one is factory bayonet for my factory shifter. The black one was heated and shaped identical to the chrome orginal.

For reference.

I was in a similar situation with my TKX from AP. Altho I have buckets with a console, I didn't like the position of the shifter. I did exactly what 1 wild R/T suggested and couldn't be happier. Great trans and love the performance. Nobody has even noticed it isn't my stock shifter.
