a stock dana 60 or a new strange s-60 dana 60. i just found out my dana 60 in my light blue dodge is a truck dana 60 and i bet its heavier than hell.
i trying to lose weight and now i see this. might be swapping out this dana for a new version if the weight difference is substantial.

I dont know, but depending on year i bet its quite a bit. The axle tubes on the truck rears can be bigger and heavier.

The s60 is suppose to be lighter but stronger due to better cast. I pulled mine from a gmc truck and yea it took all what I had and my dad to move to dumb thing plus had to get a fork lift to put it in my dads truck. I had a shop cut out the tubes and replaced them. If I had to do it all over again id just go with a s60 think its $1800 for gears and a posi unit axles and assembled.

i have eveything but case and tubes plus ill need new ladderbar brackets. going to price out a new case.

There are differences with the Danas, 3 different tubes they used. The HD version are the heaviest

I got all my stuff through strange they even have the bracket I believe for the ladder bars just have to ask.

I NEED THE CHASSIS ENGINEERING BRACKETS FOR MY AXLE TUBES.
You might be seeing a dana 60 housing for sale soon.

I had a S60 in my old RR $2000 "complete" {except brakes}, ready to bolt in {I used CalTracs & Mono Leafs}, well worth the money compared to buying an old used one & then having to completely go thru it & buy better axles, studs, bearing, gears, ends, Alum. truss support or stock cover & diff/spool etc.... Many option available... something like $569 bare housing with center section & tubes installed, no ends... Also, I think the tubes on a S60 can be had with Molly DOM thicker strong & lighter weight tubes too, if you request, it's more money of course, just like adding the ladder bar bracket, will be an option, make sure you have all compatible components there are a few different variation made, some stuff won't interchange...

Could always but them and ship them to them to have them weld it on if you wanted to. They might have some that might work with your set up.

The '501' Ford truck housing has smaller tubes and is probably the lightest stock 60 housing out there.....? The tubes are 2 3/4" diameter but are still 1/4" thick and damn strong. And you can still weld on brackets that are made for the 3" tubes if you know how.

so does anyone know how much more these truck dana 60's weigh than a strange s60 or a stock dana 60?

Weighs in near 500 lbs. More or less depending on width and brake configurations.
Found this on Wikapedia.

It definitely weighs more than a 9 inch set up.

The center section is about the same. Now are the car Dana axle tubes the same thickness? I'm thinking they are since ChryCo pulled these rear ends straight out of the truck parts bin and just stuck on simi-floating bearing housings. What the S-60 weighs? I don't know but a call to Strange might shine some light on that.

My Dana 60 is out of a E350 ford van. Narrowed to A-Body width,Strange spool,35 spline axles,S&W ladder bar brackets and shock mounts. 165lbs.

I recently built a complete a body width Dana 60 out of a ford. With a posi and complete with drums no fluid and 35 spline axles it weighed 210lbs. Disc brakes save alot.

A standard type housing like dvw posted is about 5lbs heavier than an equivalent S60 my brother has in his dart. An HD housing with the extra webbing and thicker tube will weigh about 22lb more.

The nice thing about the S60 though is the spanners to adjust vs having to use a case spreader. That amount of money for 5lbs though?

I can tell this dana 60 truck housing is strong as ****.
i hit this with 1041 hp and 830 ft. lbs of torque for the last 10 years and have had 0 issues. no twisting axle tubes, nothing.
i like the idea of the strange s60 with the side carrier shims and no case spreader and its lighter but not sure if its worth the swap out for 22 lbs.

If your housing looks like what dvw posted then its the 5lb difference. The hd ones are where the big difference is.

Hopefully this pic loads of a typical hd
