I have had lots of play in the turn signal lever...I could use it and would have to manually return on right turns...the left turn signal returns.
However, yesterday I noticed that when putting the "right" turn signal on, it would fall...I had to hold it upright to put on the right turn indicator..

could this just be the cancel cam?

ya.if the ends break off, very common, the lever will just flop around loose.drops to the gravity side.

I have seen where you can just get the plastic portion of the cam, but if you buy the whole thing, it should come wired already with a plug on the end and you just have to snake the wire through the stearing column and it plugs in by the base. Did mine last year. Just borrow a steering wheel puller from autozone and the rest is easy.
