I just scored a pair of 1968 date code 383 hp's. they were the original engines out of a wooden 20' cabin cruiser. The owner of the boat got both engines rebuilt and took the boat to the lake and slipped it in the water and the boat broke in half! The engines got wet but have never been fired.The guy just walked away and left it there,so the marina owner called me and said get this junk off my property.I am not up on marine engines other than one turns in reverse rotation so it would need a proper cam and intermediate shaft,and the other would need a diferent cam anyway because it would have the same specs as a broom handle. Haven't got them apart yet,should be interesting.I got all the out drives,water manifolds,carbs{afb's} and MP distributors.Any input would be appreciated.
 
As an old hotrod flatbottom pilot it seems to me that the best solution is for you to get into performance boating, be a shame not to. Find an old freshwater perf. boat that's been dead for a few years and refit it. Velvet drives or Crusaders? Great score. WOW!
 
One is going to spin backwards!

I picked up a boat 440 a few years back to build it turned out to be the one that spun backwards... If you're only using one find out which direction they spin. The one that spins counterclockwise will pour/leak oil like crazy out of the rear main because the groves on the crank will push oil into the seal instead of away. A correct crank and cam should fix it.
I've got mine sitting in the garage waiting Til I find a little speed boat for it.
 
Well boys,just got stomped on for the 383s.Went to pick them up today and the marina owner said the guy is coming back in two weeks to pick it all up.Oh well,I guess its back to my 67 440,
not gonna break my heart to have to use it.
