two field alternator connections

Good info on this subject. Admins might/should make it a "sticky" for people to have access onthis subject
Maybe i am not grasping some things. On my square back alternator has one lug that is bigger, do i just replace that lug from another alternator? I have converted to an electronic ignition. The engine/forward headlight harness is from m&h electric modified for electronic ignition, and it has the connection for a dual field alternator, i read the part about replacing the plastic insulator washer with a metal washer. Btw i am using the two pin connection flat back mopar electronic voltage regulator.

The metal washer replacement is one way to become a dual field onto a single field system. Per your description You don't need that since you already have matching setup for dual field system.

Dunno on the alt stud.

Thank you Nacho

Picture of larger lug. You can pull the image closer to see it more clearly btw it is a squareback alt, wiring harness from m&h. Can i just clip the connector off the green wire, and ground to alternator case? .ATTACH=full]1212641[/ATTACH]

So not a "lug" but the brush prong! i was thinking on the output stud. That prong has been clipped off for some reason! Hence why you can connect it! Need to replace it for an untouched one.

Something smell fishy here. The only reason to make that is to prevent from connect it, just like it was grounded!

Having a squareback alt, the flat elect reg and the harness there is no a reason to ground it but wire it like must be. Ground it would allow just to connect the blue wire which comes from ign switch to the other brush and get a full output/fielded charging system with no reason. And connect just the green wire won't feed anything. You need both correctly connected to both brushes on dual field alt.

if you look at this brush, it gets widened about half way. That's where your brush prong has been cut. The smaller section is the one which accepts the plug

Is the same for both brushes ( you can check previous replies with both brushes pics )

Now wondering if that brush has been grounded somewhere somehow to get that job made!

Please once you replace that brush be sure there is no ground continuity between brushes and alt case before connect any of the brushes wires.

Can i use a prong from an extra alternator that i have ?

Yes! As far is the same brush of course, because they are two diff brushes shape. You can see them on the previous pics how diff they are. One is straight, the other one is angled. Single field alts use just the angled one with a prong to be wired. So if the donor is a single field alt, I THINK you won't be able to use it, because I think the one clipped off on that alt is the straight one.

Well, you will use the full brush/prong assembly.

I'm pretty sure that brush got a metallic washer down the holding screw! Replace it with an isolation washer. Is the only reason I can think off to get the prong clipped off to prevent from any connection being grounded with the washer
