Vacuum Pump or Canister?

Hi,

My '66 Coronet engine puts out about 10"Hg vacuum at idle. I have power brakes in the car now and have been using a vacuum canister to build up vacuum for the brake booster. It works but not all that great and am thinking about switching to an electrical vacuum pump which will provide about 21"Hg. The question is, can I just swap the canister for the pump or do I need both?

I run one on my dart, same vac issue but it is dedicated to the power booster.

I did that once and can was as you say fair. I decided to use a Leeds vaccum pump and never looked back. To answer I only use the pump.hid under battery tray and used a relay

Quick note, like Halifax mine pump is dedicated to booster only
 
I have power brakes and a canister hidden underneath my battery tray also. The canister definitely helped.

Just out of curiosity what is the info on that vacuum pump? Part number etc? Is it vacuum adjustable?
Not adjustable but it’s from Leeds and Bandit series through PST. Had a can like yours for my power brakes and didn’t deliver what I needed with my cam choice. The pump kicks on when vaccum drops below a certain pressure. Love mine and wired a relay in to maintain the 12.5 volts keyed on it needed ( long story )
 
I have a pump and cannister hidden in the left front wheelwell.

That picture was before I installed the cannister.
To me, this is a crutch. I have the anxiety that at any time, that pump could fail and I'd be without assist. I tried hydroboost but couldn't get it to work. My next move is to try a milder cam that will allow more engine vacuum.
