Valve to Piston Clearance

No one uses modelers clay for this anymore? Does require some assembly and disassembly but will let you know what is there.

That's how I do it. But you have to have the cam you're going to use and that wasn't what was asked...lol.
 
An experienced builder will have a pretty good idea of "approximate" piston to valve on various cam profiles, BUT you still want to check it with the degree wheel, dial indicator and checking springs. Lots of variables are involved, cam design, piston notch depth if any, deck height, head gasket thickness, cylinder head milling all affect the clearance. More aggressive cams seem to make larger changes with few degrees of crank rotation. My observation only. Check it, then you know, not guessing.
