I'm driving down the road on a cool day at about 30 mph and my 440 Six Pack the car quits. I pull over and try to start it. It starts up but quits immediaately, twice. Ballast resistor I say! I change it as it always carry a spare. Try to start it and nothing. Not even a kick. I change the coil. Same thing. Not a kick. I pump it but don't smell any gas. I suspect the fuel pump.

I have it towed to the garage but at 4:00 PM, parts are unavailable. So it sits in the garage all night. The next morning, I pump it twice and it starts like a charm.

Can you get vapour lock on a cool day?

Unless a fuel line is close to an exhaust pipe then I would think that the problem isn't vapor lock.

if it didnt sputter out and just quit i would guess an ignition item failed.pick up,control box, coil, hard to say without testing.

It sounds like vapor lock, but if you haven't had these issues previously - and haven't changed anything (like moving a fuel line near the exhaust), it probably isn't. Could be the coil is bad - acts up only when hot?

Mustangs 5.0's would suffer this when the TFI module would get hot, could be anywhere and after a while it would cool down and then be happy as a clam for a while again. Possibly something could have clogged up the carb and overnight the gas ate it?

As I mentioned, I changed the coil with no change.

Dont overlook that the fuel pump push rod might be worn ! I had an issue with my 66 Charger 383 that I thought was a vapor lock issue. Mine would start run for some time just fine, could be hours or minutes. It would studder and act like it was out of gas. Turns out my push rod was worn on the cam end by .300 inches. It was just barely pumping enough gas some times and other times not enough to get it started. Nothing wrong with the fuel pump. It was a most unreliable vehicle as you never knew when it would die. Finally crapped out and had to be towed. Replaced the push rod and now runs great. Terry
