Vinyl top or paint?

Our 66 Coronet 500, Citron Gold with Black Vinyl top was originally purchased in Bakersfield and must have been in dry weather for most of its life, the vinyl top was virtually all stripped off when we got it, but there is no rust. I plan on replacing the vinyl. Like someone said, these cars are mostly kept inside diminishing the rust problem.

I think most of the rot under the vinyl came from a time when these cars were used as daily transportation, they were just cars. They sat outside overnight, driven in the rain e.c.t. I wonder how well the factory even painted the roofs on cars earmarked to get vinyl?. I bet it varied from manufacture to manufacture and shift to shift. If i was to buy a original car with a vinyl top i may be a little nervous about what was under it but i wouldn't be afraid to put a vinyl top on a car just painted and was to be kept in a shop/garage.

Non matching car....paint. 86'd my half vinyl. If it was a full top I may have kept that because I think it looks cooler.

One thing I added to my '70 GTX was a vinyl top and I absolutely love it!!

How about 2 tone with a (Painted) roof, like Sox & Martin! Same effect without the vinyl & glue! Remember some of the early landau style roofs offset by nice Chrome strips or ribs! My 65 Dart GT had that without any vinyl.
